What is it with iPhones that when it tries to send an SMS text the green bar goes 90% of the way then it hangs and you get a Not Delivered notification. Try again and it still doesn't work then leave it and later it has sent the thing itself.

Is there a setting that's wrong or what?

Turn your phone on/off on a regular basis it performs faster/better, off being fully off not standby.

It's because you're sending to another iPhone user when this is happening and if their signal is bad or they're abroad it will first try to send as an iMessage (blue) then a traditional text message (green).

If it's blue it's an iMessage, which is sent via data and doesn't come off of your text message allowance.

If the other person has an iDevice, it'll be sent by iMessage as it's far preferable. If they don't, it'll fallback to an SMS text.

If you've previously been sending via iMessage, which allows you to message them via phone number, email address or any identifier basically, - then if you've previously selected the contact via their email address, when it falls back to text, it obviously can't text an email address and it can't automatically chose a number to send it to.

So it seems either their phone number is wrong, or you were previously messaging them via iMessage using an email address as the contact selection.

Check their phone number is correct, then start a new conversation with the contact selected via that number.

Try sending one to yourself to see if it is a sender fault or recipient fault.

Could simply be incorrect settings

I thought the phone had to have data enabled for iMessages to work? Data and roaming are both switched off on my phone. I get what your saying about the blue message band Lee but that doesn't happen, it's green from the off.

Now I grant you I'm in Italy but it has a full strength signal which is a lot better than at home where the damn thing also displays this tendency as does swmbo's phone. The annoying thing is it's only guilty of this 50% of the time, even to the same recipient so the iMessage theory doesn't apply. The other 50% it works instantly. Ggggrrrrrr.

Maybe just another iNonsense I'll just have to learn to live with.

I get exactly this scenario but!! only with some contacts? One of hem (I know) uses a Blackberry. I have deleted his number in my contacts and re-entered it and still have the issue. I have no idea what causes this. As above, try and text yourself to test if it is the contact that is the issue. I have suspected that it is a Vodafone/provider issue as I sometimes get the same but with actual voice calls.

I dial the number. The phone says "calling" I then here nothing and nothing happens for up to 30/40 seconds and then it connects/ringtone starts.
