Would cops with a handheld speed gadget stop me on the spot?

If there's an official volunteering scheme, where people receive equipment and training, then I don't see the problem. Special Constables and the RNLI are volunteers too, as are many firefighters.

My only concern would be the safety of the volunteers, and ensuring they are not inadvertently posing a hazard to motorists. And ideally, they will also have suitable insurance cover for personal injury.
I would add another concern for the speed camera volunteers. The people here who say that they hate them are no doubt gentle folk, but there are many motorists all too keen to pick a fight with officialdom or its representatives. Who protects the (mainly) older folk pointing speed guns when some thug stops his car and punches them?

You raise a valid point.

Traffic wardens are also too often attacked while doing their job.

Not sure what's the solution though.

In an attempt to enforce the 20 mph limit, our linear village has 4 long and wide speed humps 3 of which were constructed of cobbles many years ago. The cobbled speed humps have deteriorated to the extent that unless you want suspension damage, 10- 15 mph is the fastest reasonable speed.

Speed humps are the invention of satan and such an ignorant and negative way of controlling speed because they punish everyone for the sins of the few. Are we still in the stone age that this is the best we can come up with. I'd like our village the way it was, sans speed humps and some more modern means of speed control to be employed. I really think I'd prefer the speed humps gone even if it mean't an increase in the average speed..

I know for a fact this has happened too....see post No 12.

Never said that....or even implied it. Physical violence is seldom the right thing. The only "good" thing is that they have not been back since........its a silly place to speed anyway.....not because its dangerous or a built up area.....but because real cops are quite often there...especially at Xmas.....where I got breathalysed!!

Certainly the impression that I had from your post. But I accept your denial.

Yes.....of course!..Example ...your wife being attacked in the street in front of you.....that's for a different thread though.

I’m not sure that I’d describe pulling an assailant off someone as physical violence, nor defending anyone. But of course the courts often think different.

Physical violence is seldom the right thing.
Is it ever the right thing?
Whilst violence against others should always be a last resort, Volodymyr Zelenskyy & his countrymen have obviously decided that it can indeed be justified. Furthermore the majority of the world's governments seem to be behind that decision.?
