xp will not see usb memory stick

ive xp pro on my machine fully updated with sp3.all the usb ports on the pc work fine.when i insert a 4gb corsair flash voyager usb storage pen xp wont recognise it,it detects it ,rejects it,detects it ,rejects it etc etc.it keeps flashing away for an hour.
the pen works fine in 2 other xp machines and any vista machine.
any idea's as its driving me mad.

What does it say in Disk Manager?

Wondering if its not yet been initialised or formated or if its been assigned a conflicting drive letter.

it does not show in disc manager,it was formatted before use,when it shows in devise manager it has a seperate drive letter to the other drives

Reformat it.
Use the command line..........
use something like..........

format m:

replace the letter m (above) with the USB drive letter................

still flashing on and off when used with xp

Sounds like its fecked or it needs more voltage.

I am assuming you have tried it other USB ports? on the same machine.

Disconnect all other USB devices connected to the PC (other than your keyboard and mouse!) and then try it.

i have 3 other usb pens that all work ok,the pen thats giving me problems works in 3 other xp machines and 4 vista machines.its new so i returned it but when they tried it in 4 xp machines it worked fine so there we go,puzzled.i have 8 usb ports on the pc and its the same in each port.
the problem i have is its only detected for 2 seconds at the most then looses again so i cant alter the voltage

I had a similar problem three or four months back with a Nokia phone. Whenever I connected it, XP would do the "Detected new hardware / installing drivers" routine immediately followed by "your new device failed to install" etc., ad infinitum. Pity I can't remember how I fixed it

I do remember that I got a clue from the System Event Log though. Have you taken a look there?

common problem as it probably wants to be assigned the letter E. Disk manager, change whatever is asign to E then try the memory stick.

Disagree with the drive letter theory. It was a problem with the drive letter, then the device would be recognized, would show up in both Device Manager and Disc Management but not in My Computer due to the incorrect drive letter. It would not be constantly cycling as has been described.

Agree with Sp!ke on the power issue - sounds like it's getting just enough power to be initially recognized but not to remain powered up. Try it without any other USB devices plugged in. If it works fine in other machines but not this one then it could well be a power issue.

Hi Baz,

OK - here's the score...

Firstly, this is a known issue with Corsair Voyager Flash drives....

There are a handful of of checks you can do - otherwise it will be a case of RMA forms and replacement.

1. Try uninstalling all usb ports from device manager (If your mouse and keyboard are USB then don't bother with this step)

2. check the registry entries for USB Storage Devices.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR

Check the entry called Start. The value should be set to 3.

Sometimes registry entries are modified internally after SP upgrades and you may not see any value set in the USBSTOR registry folder. If this is the case. Create a DWORD entry called Start and set the Hexidecimal value to 3.

3. See if you can download any drivers from Corsair

4. Log a Tech support case with Corsair

5. If that doesn't work - Log into the ON-LINE RMA Form

6. Update us all...
