Your first car. Seen one for sale anywhere?

I still have mine but I'm probably selling it soon.

I have this wrong don't I?

My first car was my age, a 1966 Fiat 500 on a D reg. Wish I still had it and not rolled it!

Since I recently part exchanged my Ponton ( my first car ) for my SL , I know exactly where it is now , but I doubt that it is for sale .

I have occasionally seen other 219's for sale , but they are few and far between .

Austin Metro 1.3 L 5dr

Austin Mini Metro.

I did have a Vauxhall Viva HB and an Austin 1100 but they were before I failed my driving test, and I gave them away to family.

My first car was the face lift Ford Cortina 1965,the face lift as far as I can remember was that you got two facia vents that blew air onto your face it had the 4 speed box and I bought it in 1967,it was Goodwood Green, had it 4 years and then bought a new Ford Escort 1972,I suppose we all look back on our first cars with a certain fondness, but without doubt they all were a complete load of rubbish compared to todays cars, you could practically see them rust right before your eyes, and the threadstarter with a Morris Marina, has to be thankful he is still with us those things could not go round corners and the steering was plain crazy.

Only on early cars. Whilst not exactly built for the track, once teething problems had been corrected the Marina would steer and handle as well as Cortinas, Vivas and the like.

J324 WBO, BMW 320i Coupe. With 17 TSW Hockenheims, felt like Id literally gone to Heaven, 2.0 straight 6, 24valve 153bhp [emoji1]. In metallic grey, was a car I loved!

Well I remember the magazine Car&Car Conversions, running a article on making a Marina race track ready, the engine was breathed upon, and a straight through exhaust by Mike the Pipe was fitted and everything was going well, until they handed the car over to a guy who set up F1 cars after 3 weeks he gave up saying he could not make it go round corners, apart from that there is a memorable episode of The Professionals on morning tv where they all pile into a Marina and roar off across a building site and then turn sharp left between some buildings at that point the whole car went onto two wheels and looked like turning over,I bet they did not repeat that, the Marina was the worst offering of BL by far, proof is you very rarely see one kept and in top condition at these car shows, but you are welcome to your opinion,

I had (and this is true, so true I struggle to write this without being sick) a MKI Lotus Cortina. White with Green stripe & CND tail lights.

I got rid of it, as if it rained anywhere in the world it would refuse to start. Living in Scotland this meant that most days it didn't start. WD40 was not invented then.

Car and car conversions now that was a magazine.

Disagree on the Marina though my BIL had a TC and we sorted that handled every bit as good as cortinas and capris.

Surely BL's worst offering was the Princess wedge?

Mine was a 1964 mk1 cortina, six years old and falling to bits, Goodwood green with yellow side stripe, put a 1500 gt motor in it, I learned to weld very quickly, but still very fond memories.

A touch of nostalgia and rose tinted glasses :D

Thank you. I'm not suggesting that it was a great car but once early problems were resolved it didn't handle any worse than contemporary rwd Fords, Vauxhalls etc. And it actually outsold most of its rivals so can't have been all bad.

Maybe but there were a lot worse cars than the Marina from that era

Fiat 131
Allegro
Lancia Beta
Peugeot 504
Talbot Horizon/Tagora

To name a few,

My first weapon was an Hillman Avenger rapidly replaced by a Saab 900 turbo with the turbo lag of a cross channel ferry so that was rapidly replaced with a Chevette HS

The Allegro is technically a far better car than the Marina and most of its contemporaries. It wasn't a looker but offered fwd, front disc brakes and hydragas suspension which put it light years ahead of the Marina, Escort etc.

Fwd an advantage/superior? Hydragas suspendion was good whilst it was working unfortunately 95% of the time it didn't . Marina had front discs infact my BIL Triumph TR3 had disc brakes and that was from the late fifties

Your joking now! The 131 was a good drive, the Beta even better and 504 was probably one of the best cars in it's class at the time. And I'd have an Allegro over a Marina all day long. Can't comment on the Tagora but the Horizon must have had something going for it as it was awarded COTY iirc.
