today my window regulator wire snapped off it was rusted and i wonder if you can replace just the wire or do i have to change the complete regulator ?

Has anyone managed to repair a regulator by replacing the snapped/mangled wire cable? Both of my rear ones have gone and replacements seem quite costly. I could just wedge them up and forget about them but I like things to work properly.

Does anybody know if you can fit quiet motors on to them? maybe from a w140, w202 etc? I assume they are less noisy if anybody can confirm and shoudnt post much of a threat changing them around. Would be nice if that whine can can be thrown out of the window....:o Just a thought.
