Mercedes CLK
I recently bought a CLK280 2007, I am unsure if my one is has the balance shaft issue. My engine number is 27294030584011.

I recently went to my local Mercedes specialist for a diagnostic test, below are the fault codes that showed up

1208 – Constant adjustment of intake camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction ‘retarded’ (P0016)

1200 – Constant adjustment of exhaust camshaft of right cylinder bank in direction ‘retarded’ (P0017)

Please can someone shed some more light to this?

Many thanks

Didn't your Mercedes specialist interpret those codes for you & give you the SP?

These are not the greatest engine, and cost big money to repair.

Does the car run well enough that you could offload it?

Sounds like worn cam shaft gears and idler.as above what did your specialist diagnose?

You have asked the same question on the m272 engine thread.:(

Specialist says its a costly repair take it back to the dealer you bought it from. Contacted dealer says its not his problem put the phone down. I am writing a letter to Mercedes to see whether they will cover something towards the £2800.00 they quoted me. Any suggestions to what i can put in the letter? I've read all the US forums. I don't know what else to do.

first time on forum navigating around the website is a little tricky.

Sorry martyz

@ nick mercedes

I bought it June 2015, it was advertised on autotrader I went to London to pick it up by the time i got there it was 8pm. The dealer picked me up from the tube station and took me to a location where the car was parked (not the dealership) i didn't think anything of it as he said he said he closed at 5pm and was waiting for me to arrive.
I checked it all out the car was absolutely fine until i paid for it bought it home and booked it in for a service. Specialist connected it to diagnostic machine before carrying out the service and that's when i found out about the M272 balance shaft problem.

If you've had it a month and there's something wrong with it - the dealer needs to cough up, that said does he have a pitch or just sell them off the street?

I honestly don't know if he has a pitch but the one i bought was off the street.

I believe you have the statutory 3 month period from date of purchase, in which if you can establish that the car is not fit for purpose, then you have recourse for a full refund....I think. Of course this may be much more difficult if you bought from a guy who sells from the street....if you paid by credit card then you may have some protection, but I expect that to be unlikely if a street purchase.
As suggested above, if the car runs ok atm, then probably best to move it on as quickly as you can, even if that means using it as part ex at a more reputable dealer maybe, although you take a financial hit in that way.........good luck with it, not a pleasant situation at all

I think you can forget MB contributing, even if the car has full MB service history.

Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained...

I think you have been ''turned over''.......the seller almost certainly was aware of the issue......are you going to do the same to someone else?

Presumably you have bought a good car? The M272 power unit is fundamentally a good one once the balancer shaft issue is fixed.

MB will not contribute.......your recourse is to the seller but it is likely to cost more time, money and trouble than the end result is likely to warrant.

Get the car fixed and dilute the damage by enjoying the car for very many years.

I don't wish to sell the car to someone else knowing that there is a major problem with it, i wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

You just made my day by saying that the M272 power unit is a good one, once the balancer shaft issue is fixed.

I am looking to get the car repaired, i like it and i want to keep it.

The car is a CLK280 it's done 87000 miles, can these engines go upto 200000 miles?

At £2800 to repair and knowing the issue, is it worth considering a reconditioned/remanufactured engine as a replacement rather than paying the labour to strip your engine down and replace?

How much is an engine for this car?

One in CLS guise sold a few months ago with 220,000 miles on the clock. It was an early one as well so prob had the balance gear issue. There was an indie on one of the forums fixing them for substantially less than your quote.

Good on you Sprocket1 as I would endorse MicB's post.

If its any consolation to you, I am in a similar position.

I bought a 06 CLK280 with 68k, 4 days later the gearbox refused to change up. This was a 2767 fault which meant a gearbox TCU replacement. That with a couple of other minor things was £750, but the TCU was covered by warranty.

My 272 engine number is within the range of the balance shaft issue, and I kicked myself for insufficient research beforehand. However, its not showing any symptoms yet and I will just get it fixed if it happens.

The car otherwise is one I am very happy with, full service history (which included camshaft sensors), satnav, nappa, very clean body and interior etc so I intend it to be a keeper.
