£2800 to repair

If a manufacturer produce a vehicle with an inherent defect and continues manufacturing in the same defect even when they know about it and then doesn't stand by the customer then they don't deserve to be in business at all.

Yes I know all the manufacturers do it but that doesn't make it right.

I agree, if it's a design fault, the designer is responsible.

I'm 55 and in my youth, MB always stood for quality engineering and reliability and charged a premium for that. While MB is still a desirable label, their record for quality has been tarnished with corrosion and other reliability issues.

To be fair, they seem to have addressed the corrosion problems on their later models.

Out of interest, how much would the job cost at a good indy?

I agree entirely BUT.....if they did not all do it they would not be there so you would not be riding around in your Merc.

Look what happened to Volvo...over engineered and reliable motors got swallowed up by Ford which have turned them into the most unreliable and expensive car to run......but people still buy them.

It just seems as though this time MB overdid the "obsolescence bit" and got caught out.

If the OP likes the motor just pay up and move on...

I've been talking with Mercedes Exeter and apparently the balance shaft was ok, now there saying the knocking noise is being caused by an oil blockage. The cam wheel was "broken" which i suppose would give the same fault codes.
Looking at the history they repaired a worn camshaft last year which would point to an oil blockage then. They replaced the camshaft but didn't look for the cause of the damage.
