Car
2017 Audi RS6 Avant Performance Edition. Range Rover Supercharged - Lovely!
In my seemingly never ending quest to stop my car from making an awful smell I am going to replace the EGR valve.

Is this something I could install myself or do I have to take the car to the MB dealer, again...

6, new injectors, 6, new glow plugs, new thermostat, MAF...... and the car still stinks.

Car well maintained - all B services, full history... I have owned it since May and have spent maybe £4,000 on it up to now:mad:

I am losing faith in my MB dealer and think that they may be going the long way around fixing the problem (intentionally or not), but I need to sort out this problem:mad:
Mrs T says I have to fix the car or get rid of it... and she means it too:o

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Before you change the valve check the connection between the turbo and the CAT as they can leak fumes. The easy way to spot it is to look down there with a torch and rev the car up and look for a little smoke from the joint.

Is is it fumes or diesel fuel?

Fumes. Acrid oily smell. Makes you feel delicate after a while..

Many Thanks.
The fumes are not as bad as they used to be on the inside (still there though) but are awful outside.

Mrs T comes out to the car covering her air intakes with a scarf and hurries the children into the car to avoid certain death from inhalation of the fumes... Yeah I know...

Mrs T says the car must go if I dont cure the problem:o

You're probably right, I just expect the dealer to have got a result after spending so much.

One thinks that as the jobs take place and after visit after visit that THIS time they'll sort the problem.... But the car still stinks.

I think I'll post and see who other members can reccommend in Manchester/Cheshire.

Thanks

Paul.

Get that seal checked. Its only a few quid and about an hour to fit

Thanks for the advice. I'll have someone check it out and keep you posted.

It seems I have more chance of sorting out the problem by talking to you guys on the forum than I have by chucking my hard earned at my dealer.

Thanks for the advice.

Revved the engine and had a small amount of smoke from out the side of the turbo seal.

Thanks for pointing that out to me;)

For a new EGR valve, I have been quoted £475.00 fitted from MB Macclesfield.

Is this a fair price?

Sorry for butting in here, but as you have found smoke leaking from the turbo seal - the smoking gun as it were - why are you still looking to replace the EGR valve?

Hi Keith,

The smoke from the seal was minimal and the whole car is now smoke free thanks to the addition of Forte Advanced Diesel Treatment administered by Ian B. Walker whilst carrying out an "A" service.

I did however, want to find out if the price from the dealer was a fair price, which I suspect it is. ;)

Regards

Paul.

From your location you will be going to Macclesfield or Stockport. I know nothing of Macclesfield, but plenty of Stockport. See other threads! I would advise you to check out the service schedule against what has been done, which you can check to some extent by seeing what filters etc you have been charged for. And you may well find that the oil charged for varies considerably. If less than expected the evacuation of the oil has been incomplete or the filter charged for may not have been fitted. At the one I used in the past there was never the ticked off service sheet (which is computerised) and should be given to you. This allows omissions to go undetected.

I drew up a table and showed on it the items due that involved parts, and when they were due to be replaced. Then I looked up what had been charged for, and was horrified.

There were issues about the 10% on labour and spares for older cars too, which you should qualify for. The lack of detail on the invoices made it impossible to audit. (I am experienced at such things as I used to work for C&E on audit and other work.) It became clear that staff there were not aware of the terms of the concession. They are not aware of the terms of the Mobilo Life warranty, and failed to correctly advise my wife of it when broken down. They do not even seem to be aware of the goodwill claim procedures, which I only discovered from fori like this, to my cost. They never seem to have service items in stock, simply advising you to have the work done at a later date, which is inconvenient. Another MB owned dealer told me that they had a reputation in the trade for that. I have just found out that they had not put the service details on the system, leading the Mobilo people to conclude that we did not have a service history. Finally I was once charged for work that had clearly not been done.

If interested I can email the table to you: it won't come out right in this forum. It makes uncomfortable reading.

I found MB Direct in central Manchester more on the ball and helpful. They are also cheaper than say Blackburn. Their charges are (for older cars) about £109 inc VAT, compared to £115 at Blackburn. They also have their own body shop, and carry out inspections for goodwill claims.

Someone recommended an independent in Warrington in this forum, and you mention someone called Ian Walker. I would be happy to get his details from you.

Much depends on how much you value your Mobilo Life warranty, if you have it still. It is significantly better than the new (01.04.2008) Mobilo warranty, and I have recently suffered from the dealer where the car is at present being confused by the two. I am trying to get the Mobilo Life details from MB customer service, as my warranty is in the car, and some distance from me.

I hope this helps.

The EGR is around the £240 mark and quite simple to fit.

Many Thanks Phil.

I need to get my thinking cap on before I decide what to do about service in general and whether to actually change the EGR valve. For all I know the valve may well be as clean as can be, but I wouldn't know unless the bits were taken out for inspection.

You can look up Ian B. Walker on this forum (I think he likes to be called Ian Wright), he is at 124Works in Kirkham Preston. Just don't expect a biscuit with your cuppa.:D

By the way, Mercedes Macclesfield, Stockport and Manchester are all under the same ownership. I had excellent bodywork carried out at Manchester. Tried Stockport on several occasions for the W120 AND our Sprinter, but they never once bothered to call us back.
I actually like the guys at MB Macclesfield, but they do do a few little things that make me unhappy with them, which is a shame.

PS. I don't work for MAP either, good guess though. ;)

PPS. Please do send me the table. If you can't PM it to me I'll send you my email address.

Regards,

Paul.
