1 Day, 1 S-Class, 500 Miles

Love my old S classes, nothing but positivity from me. Bought my SE sight unseen from eBay for £405, its been an absolute rock of a car & only got better with use. Makes the Reading to Totnes trip disappear very quickly and with a sense of occasion.
My SEC, another bargain bucket, bought sight unseen. It had sat for a year but passed MOT straightaway, I had to change the fuses due to fuse tip corrosion. Then drove it 600 miles at high speed with no hiccups at all. Awesome machines, I'm completely addicted.

The later ones, they must be very gorgeous when they are healthy. I work for a chauffeur firm part time and the only problems they've had has been with the awful dealer. The latest S we have is a beautiful car in every way. (2012 S320L CDI) I don't get to drive that one properly though.

606 sounds lumpy and noisy on idle compared to the 613. Both of them excellent engines of their generations. Clarkson raved about the turbo 606. (Maybe not the best reference though!)

My 605 was noisy at idle.

Olly changed the engine mounts.

Problem solved.

I can only imagine how good a 500 mile trip in a S class would be!

I done a 525 mile, 9 1/2 hours all in drive in my CLK just a month after I got it. Drove from a town called Sheringham (just outside Norwich) to my hotel (Stonefield Castle, just outside Tarbert, West coast of Scotland).

Only stopped for fuel and dinner at BK off the M6 - even eat that in the car.

Power is delivered well and the handling is superb - considering I came from a 4.7 v8 and only have 16" wheels although staggered. Seats are stupidly comfortable and supportive even when pushing it round the corners. The Bose sound kept my ears more than happy with my varied music taste. Navigation (although 2003 disc) guided me flawlessly from A-B and I loved the fact it spoke out the road names unlike a TomTom. The average MPG on the trip was 35ish which I thought was superb (coming from 12-18 :D).

I'm really in two minds whether to trade her in for a E class later next year or just keep her for a while longer. Either way, I'm certainly don't regret moving over to MB!

I've driven nearly 900 miles in the past week, in a 639 Vito. Only problems were a new starter motor, random electrical problems, crazy dash readings and ESP faults, a blown headlight bulb, a juddery clutch and more rust showing up. Who knows what next week will bring.

My 250 quid W124 200E did 2400 miles in a week, and it didn't start fist time once. I turned the key again.

Not sure how you managed that. I don't think I ever managed more than 26mpg in mine .

From my run home today from work.

We need to try and balance out this internet forum with a little positivity of how great our cars are!

Quite right, due to Brittany Ferries going on strike recently, I was faced with an 1100 mile journey home from S. France. It ended up taking only 17 hours driving and I still averaged 43mpg for the trip. Got home as fresh as a daisy too. The CLK is actually a very comfortable long distance car.

Dont forget b class. Not a great motorway car.

I quite enjoy the s class around town too. I reason that if I have to sit in traffic. I may as well do it in something comfortable...

You are quite right though!

I can get mine to show 22mpg - doesn't mean it's true!

You believe what you want to believe.

I've had that read over 30 mpg from Glasgow to Manchester.

It's good enough for me.

Check the fuelly link in my signature. I missed the first 2 fill ups but the rest are all on there. I do over 80% city driving.
It is only slightly worse than my previous clk270cdi and virtually no difference from my previous e320cdi.

I normally see 27-30mpg round town and 45 on a run on my obc which is accurate with tank to tank checks.

I also previously had a s320 petrol and the diesel is better round town but MUCH better on a run. I always get over 40 even with very brisk driving.

Do your sums though as a 320 petrol can be picked up very cheaply and if you arent doing many miles the petrol may work out cheaper overall.

The 220 can bring some big bills as im sure you know. Just be prepared. Ive been really lucky with all 3 of mine and not had any airmatic issues whatsoever.

It's not a case of belief - it's knowing how trip computers work. Pulse width from injectors and speed signal which is over estimated by up to 10%.

Please understand.

I don't care and I don't know why you are trolling this thread.

It's about the pleasure of owning an S Class.

If you don't have one - leave it well alone.

If you care about absolute mpg you wouldnt own an s class or most mb at all. Obc is a good guide (as long as it hasnt been remapped!) and since I changed from 17" to 18" wheels the reading has become very accurate on my vehicle.

Don't hold back, tell the whole world how great your e430 is!

Recently did 500 miles in one day in my CLS - total wafting comfort and effortless. Averaged 42mpg and wasn't hanging around either. Definitely the type of driving that Merc's were built for.

I'd have an S class in an instant if they did an estate, but a saloon really is no use to me.

Charles , just for you : three generations of S Class estates -
