1 Day, 1 S-Class, 500 Miles

Charles , just for you : three generations of S Class estates -

W140 estate

W126 estate

W116 estate

W126 and W116 adaptations look quite pretty!

The W140 version must be absolutely huge in the flesh.

The 116 , I believe , was done by Crayford ( they certainly built some 116 estates even if that example is not one of them ) .

The 5 door W126 owes much to the W123 estate and whoever did the job based his conversion on one .

The W140 is a well known car in the S Klasse Club , converted by its owner and does look vast .

This has gotta be my next car :

I washed my LWB 220 today and when you do it by hand you are reminded how large these vehicles are. Driving it around every day, I kind of forget.

Now that would be perfect for me.

First decent trip in the old girl since we've been back off winter diesel. 56mpg. Helped by the 50mph average speed limit from fleet services to the M25. Cruise control on at 70mph for the rest of the journey. Not reset on the motorway or any other such trickery. That is from my door to the end of the high street in New Malden.

^ Very impressive mpg considering the average speed.

I'll be checking my mpg v ave speed on Tues on a 180+ mile round trip up the M3/M25 to Heathrow. I won't even get to get half of your figure.

Well I did 560miles in my W221 320cdi from home to the peak district and back and over 4 days it returned 36.6 mpg I never rely on computers just the trip meter and using the same pump at the same garage to fill the car up to the nozzle goes click, yes the car has some niggles, but it is a dream to drive,it is costing me twice the amount my old car took to run,is it worth it YES!!

Funny i could always be found at the end of New Malden high street, down Cambridge Avenue on a Saturday afternoon a few years ago.

Not any more :)

Hmmm My cl500 shows 32.7mpg Had 2 w221's before -cdi and wasn't blown away with its consumption actually made me wonder whats the point in diesel S class
Saying that w220 with straight six cdi is brilliant on fuel

Yeah, I've also tried a W221 320cdi and found the mpg to be 30% worse than the W220 on average. That's one of the reasons I stick with the old girl and because she is so flipping reliable...you don't hear people say that about W220s much. I've had a few of them now and all have had niggles but this one has been a dream to own over the last 3 and a half years. Driven mostly every day and just doesn't put a foot wrong.

I log all of my fill ups with mileage and I know that the display is accurate within 5%.

There was 4 of us on board today, boot fully loaded and plenty of luggage in the cabin. I have no doubt I could better the figure significantly with no luggage, no passengers, AC off, not using cruise control and inflate tyres to their Max pressures. I usually run the tyres at or just below min pressure these days for optimum ride comfort.

Value for money, I'm really not sure if a facelift W220 S320 cdi can be beaten as a long range touring vehicle. I'm sure I worked out once that the theoretical range is about 1100 miles from the 88 litre tank.
