Folks

My 124 300te which I love and want to keep has an issue.

The gearbox makes a(best described as) hissing sound when cold and out of park into any gear. It sounds like something spinning on paper (if that makes any sense)

When warm the problem is much less noticeable, but is still there.

The bigger concern is that it makes a very audible ticking when moving in reverse (only when moving) this ticking is coming up through the gear shift area. So I assume that it is gearbox. If in reverse and not moving then all is fine. If I roll back in neutral then no ticking so I have to believe that it is something in or around the gearbox that only reverse and movement triggers.

I have had a full ATF and filter change with no difference.

Searching the web has thrown up no suggestions. I am about to book the car into my Indie to have it checked out. It also needs lower ball joints replacing. Am I looking at a losing battle? Are there any adjustments that could be tried on this box without the need to remove/replace/rebuild.

GROVER. Did try and help me previously so apologies for a bit of a repeat.

W124 gearboxes make all kinds of noises. I'd ignore them - it'll let you know in no uncertain terms when it's had enough

it really sounds as if something is catching the propshaft or some moving part.
