Can anyone advise if the auxiliary 12V socket in the passenger footwell of a 2008 SLK is permanently live? I would like to use this for a trickle charger instead of croc clips on the battery terminals.

It shouldn't be. Too easy to run the battery flat if something left plugged in. ;)

Plug a phone charger in with your phone on the end of it, put phone on dash so you can see it outside the car then take keys out and lock car. Is phone still charging?

Or am I missing the point?

You are not missing the point.
I was intending to physically check when I got back to the car tonight, but thought I'd ask on here before buying a plug (original is long gone) from Maplins on the way home (just in case I was wasting my time).

On our 2005 SLK its switched with the ignition. In fact I can tthink of any MB that has a permanent live power socket. No doubt someone will know otherwise.

I've recently installed a subwoofer, and during that I managed to discover that both of my 12v sockets are switched off with the ignition.
