156 Vs 157

^ Careful. Somebody won't like that opinion.;):D
Actually, I can't recall anyone disagreeing that a stock M156 has a glorious exhaust note. I agree. Apart from a Ferrari V12, nothing touches it in my book.:thumb:

But after the exhaust note, in what other area is the M156 superior over an M157? Be honest.

Economy?. Nope. It drinks more
Acceleration? Nope. It's slower 0-60 and 0-100. The only figures pertaining to our roads.
Torque? Nope, Way less, whatever rpm.
Driveability? Nope (see torque.)
Reliability? Unproven. Both have flaws.
Inexpensive tuneability? Nope. £600 gets you around 700bhp in an M157. You need a £10k supercharger/meth kit to get anywhere near that with an M156. Best you'll see is 550bhp ish. Same as a stock M157.
So we are left with exhaust note.
Not enough to persuade me to choose an M156 over an M157.
And the M177 is even better.
Convince me otherwise.

Nearly stalled that when pulling away!

And too be fair, him to whom you are referring can't have liked the stock 156 sound that much or he would not have fitted a full Akra system!!!

Our tastes are similar. I like my V8s AMG flavoured and my V12s Ferrari flavoured.

I absolutely love the M156. In my humble opinion the M156 makes a better toy than the M157 makes a better everyday every purpose car.

Although I do know someone 👀 who uses a car with an M156 a lot.

Both M156 and M157 are great, and the M177 I hear is even greater, really looking forward to getting behind one 🙂

M156 is a bit slower than my M157 but i feel there is something very special that I like about M156 especially in a S211 chassic. It is the mechanical nature in an old chassis that I like about it. The doors are really heavy too, you notice this, it closes like a bank vault, feels like old skool engineering.

S211 M156 is my weekend toy and my W212 M157 is my daily. M157 is lightning McQueen, very stylish, not a slow car and its possibly the best bang for buck money could buy. At the moment, M177 E63s commands a higher step up price tag, it's remains expensive but prices will reduce 🙂

Both great cars

I'm not angry Tom.
Just wondering why you keep putting up these 156 v 157 threads.
Nobody cares but you.

For someone who lets on they dont care or has no interest in such a thread you sure have a funny way of showing it.

The video that started the thread tells everyone what they need to know from both cars/engines. You have your preferred fair enough, we all have our preference whether it be Torque, comfort, styling.

Regarding your outlook on the m156. How long have you spent behind the wheel of such a vehicle?

In every measurable way, the M157 beats the M156, except that the M156 revs higher. You don't need to drive one to know that.

Most people agree that the M156 sounds better. That's about it, really, isn't it?

Yep if one is north of 99

156 = king

😆

Still living in the past, eh, slim? That was twelve years ago. Sure you're not 'north of 99'...? ;)

Laddie Bants...

I can resist anything but temptation.

One thing i'd like to know is how these engines can sound so different. AMG's to my ear tend to sound aggressive but also can sound a bit agricultural. AMG's to me sound more akin to American V8's, so more burbly and shouty. Whereas say a Ferrari V8 sounds much more refined and zippier for want of a better word. Is that more to do with how the exhaust is handled or is there something on the mechanical side that makes them sound so different in character?

I do think the AMG sound does match the car - in the saloons and estates for sure. A Ferrari-esque sound i don't think would match that well.

It's a mechanical thing.

The AMG V8's have a cross-plane crank which gives the engine an uneven firing interval and the classic "American V8" burble. The Ferrari V8's have a flat-plane crank that gives an even firing order, hence the different sound.

I buy them for what they do, not how they sound. That said, though, powerful engines tend not to sound like wet farts in a biscuit tin.

I might be the outlier here, however my favourite AMG V8 engine is the one I am driving or was lucky enough to drive most recently. I would even go so far as to say that my favourite sounding AMG V8 engine is also the one I’m driving or was driving last.

I’ve noticed that those people with the strongest views on which AMG V8 is best prefer the car they currently own or have owned/driven last. Perhaps expected as they buy the one they like best, but could also be explained by it being the one they have driven most recently.

Perhaps my more easily-influenced views are that way because I don’t own one, and if I did then I’d perhaps be more vocal about its virtues. I doubt that I’d suggest that it’s better than the rest though, just different, and just my preference.
