I feel a little stupid but....

In an attempt to replace the battery in my wifes car I got as far as taking the old one out but then shut the boot. Now I can't open it again.

You've probably guessed that we haven't got a valet key!

I've tried to put power throught the cigar lighter but to no avail.

Any ideas?

The cigar lighter might be a switched circuit, is there a jump start point in the engine compartment where you can connect up a 12V source for jump starting? If there is, you could try this to see if connecting power to the jump start point will allow you to open the boot.

Good luck

Jack the front up and you might be able to get a jump lead on the big wire on the starter soloniod which normally runs direct to the battery, you can stick the earth lead anywhere on the chassis, you just gotta be carefull that the live lead that should be on the battery isnt earthing itself on anything as its loose and not connected to anything.

Had to drill the boot lock out on my mates when he did it because he had removed the feed from the battery to replace it.

Actually yours should be easier to sort if you can get access to the inside of the car and hence you can open the bonnet, i couldnt get in my mates one as it had been delocked and was only openable at at all on the remote, the boot lock was in it still "for emergencies" but was broken. lol

You don’t say what year your car is but if it is a W202 then this might work as a last resort if attempts by electrical means of entry fail.

Dec

If you open the bonnet, to the passenger side of the car should be a black box with a cross on the top resembling a Scottish flag. If you pop this open you should see 3 bolts with cables coming from them. Attach the red clamp to this and the black clamp to any other bolt on the bonnet (to earth) and you should see and hear the locks pop open and/or get someone to pop the locks open using the switch in the console.
