My 1986 190e, 130,000 miles recently flew through it's MOT(unlike last year) The garage, almost in a fit of pique, advised that the auto box needed a strip & rebuild @£1300. Only fault I was aware of was a clonk when going from D to R when stationary and hot.(The box not me) When cold all OK. Prop & Drive shafts OK. Is there any idiot's guide that is available to check my box?. or must I go to our local MB dealer for a check out?

If the gearbox is doing nothing more than clonking from D to R when warm, then i cant see why it needs rebuilding  How and why exactly did they come to that conclution??? Did you ask them to look at it for some reason???

The 190's are well known for having clonky gearghanges,(they are getting on a bit now)but that certainly doesnt mean it, they, need rebuilding. If anyting, an oil change does the world of good. But just make sure you dont take it to the same place you get your MOT's done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And dont take it to the dealers either. Try and find an independant or a gearbox specialist.

Oil changes on those box's are easy peasy, but be prepared for wet, oil covered arms, oh and while you are under there change the filter too
