1954 300SL Gullwing Project

Well all I can say is that if you really have bought this car, then you've done your money.

You should know the costs of restoring a 300SL, and if so, you'll know that $7,000 for a basket case is a false economy. At that price, the spaceframe will need completely rebuilding, which means you haven't actually bought anything.

I don't understand why you would have turned down a $10k car in Cuba. You can't realistically have expected to find one cheaper elsewhere. If this Indonesian owner was actually prepared to sell for $7,000 then you can be sure that enough of it has already been sold elsewhere for a clone to be built. Owners know what these cars are worth, and at the dross end of the market, thier opinions are highly inflated.

If you really have the budget to restore one of these (and your referral to having found people all over the world to help make bits suggests you don't), then six years searching to spend $7,000 just doesn't make sense.

I'll not put my hat in the microwave just yet, but I'm fully prepared to eat it in umpteen years' time when you finish your restoration.

Woo Hoo ..... :bannana:

Good luck with your 'restoration' ;)

Well, Im not sure about the price but this guy may not be a scammer. He does say he's bought it. Maybe he's bought a shell and intends to use new parts?? I dunno.

I have been to Indonesia, allbeit a while ago now, and I saw a 300SL gullwing being driven by an old guy. It looked pretty knackered but was working. I think people know how much they are worth now.

I saw one for sale on Ebay a month or so ago, fully restored, it looked beautiful and it sold for about £100k if I remember, so maybe the bloke is genuine.

I also saw Jeremy Clarksons programme where he went to Cuba and there was loads of old cars there. One of them was a gullwing and the guy wanted $50k for it which according to Clarkson was "ridiculous".

Anyway, scammer or not, Id love to find one myself, so if anyone knows of any a bit closer than Indonesia or Cuba, PM me!!

:D Hi ET,
It just so happens I have a gull wing in excellent condition, if you send me a bankers draught or one of those Western Union thingies for £95,000 I will deliver it to your door. No need to worry about travelling thousands of miles to get ripped off, I will do a local, more thorough job for less :)

Take care,

Hey,give the guy a break.....

......he could be genuine.

If it was fully restored, the buyer got a bargain! A 300SL coupe in average condition is going sell at auction for around £150k. A Perfect example will be closer to £200k.

I'm willing to go lower than £95k; but I will need you to transfer £100k to a friend in Romania, and then I will give you £10k when you collect the car from me in Brighton. :p

Ahhh, I have fond memories of Romania. A skiing accident which went tragically wrong. This is why I need to make an offer you see, I need money left to install the hand controls. £90k plus 3 camels and a crate of Fanta? And thats my last offer....:D

I can do better than that. I have a beautifully restored Gullwing which I will be selling at this weekend's Mercedes Benz Club concours event. Unfortunately the keys and documentation were lost in a fire earlier this year, so you will have to arrange for the vehicle to be trailered from the event. ;)

I think this has gone on long enough lads.
