1996 e320 auto box problem

i have a 1996 e320 elegance and am having problems with the automatic gearbox the car has vertually no reverse it will crawl slowly in reverse but on any incline the engine just revs and the car will not move also i have noticed if the car goes in reverse down hill if you apply the brakes there is a shuddering noise from the rear of the car, the gearbox drives through all the forward gear perfectly.any advice would be appreciated.

It does sound like the gearbox is toast. You need to remove the sump pan and have a look for any metal filings.

If there are any a re-build or replacement is required.
