Hi there,
I just bought a mint C240 auto 1998. The only issue is a slight knock or rattle from one of the pulleys at the timing belt, I think it may need a new pulley bearing?? If so is this a big/expensive job?

Is it a timing belt or chain?

Cheers:bannana:

Camshaft is a chain.

Regards the knock - do you mean the aux belt for the alternator/water pump etc. The crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) can cause problems and it will cost £££s if it comes apart.

See this thread for more info.

It's more likely to be the tensioner - above and to the right of the harmonic balancer - an easy fix if it is.

Welcome

The engine has a timing chain. No belt.
If the noise is from one of the multi v pulleys, check each one for play, obviously switch the engine off first.
Check that the tensioner is tensioning and that the damper has not failed.

Hi Stevesey / franey, Cheers. I think is is one of the the aux belts for the alternator/water pump front RH side. Its not that severe yet. I will get it checked out tomorrow.

I have owned Honda and mostly jap cars which were all belts so excuse my ignorance of the cam chain.....So do these need changing at all?

Thanks for the help guys.

Mine used to wobble (the tensioner) but it turned out the water pump was shot....
Mines a C240, 98, 126k miles...

No. Just keep up the service schedule with regular good quality oil changes.

Your car is the right age for the Composite Crankshaft Pulley problem. Make sure you get it checked out. If the material bonding the inner and out parts of the pulley fails at speed the fragments can destroy the the front timing case and part of the sump casting necessitating a very expensive engine repair.
