Hi,

I recently got a 98 slk 230 auto and when I test drove it and drove it back everything was fine, now I have or may have a slight problem.

When the w/s switch is in W (winter?) the car behaves fine, yet when in S mode, which I believe is standard, all is well until I come to a stop, then the car lurches forward, as if the clutch isnt disengaging smoothly. As I have never had an auto or a mercedes, can anyone advise if this is normal and if it isnt, any thoughts on the likly cause?

On a second thought, what setting do you normally have the mode swith in and does it make a difference to economy or wear on the gearbox?

Any thoughts welcome

Cheers

Shawn

You 'normally' drive it about in S - MB apparently do not recommend extended driving about in W - this was later revised as new boxes have C (Comfort) and S (Sport) mode.

When you slowdown there is not a clutch as such which disengages, but moreso the torque converter lockup being applied - depends how briskly you decelerate really.

What is the mileage of the car - it's likely that the autobox fluid could do with a change?

Hi, thanks for the advice, the car is 57k and although there is a full stamped service book, I suspect that uinless the fluid was a requirement of a scheduled service, I doubt it was done, but you never know.

The deceleration is fairly modest, I would say, although if I am firmer on the brakes when I actually stop, then there is no lurch effect felt, presumeably as the brakes prevent this.

I will look to getting the auto fluid changed when I next speak to a local mechanic who I have used in the passed, unless anyone knows any specialist in Cheshire, around Northwich / Warrington?

Cheers
