Sorry gang i have read this on here and after 2 hours looking cannot find it. The black Coolant bottle on the left has the little black thing in to top up to. The clear coolant bottle on the right doesn't it seems to have a filter in there, both have the rad picture on the top cap. I have looked in the book it only says about topping the left black one up, nothing about the right clear. What is going on? the Right bottle looks on the outside about 1/2 full maybe a bit more but cannot find any marks or anything. Please enlighten me, thanks gang.

Pictures would be helpful.

I have never heard of two Coolant tanks, are you sure one is not the power steering fluid?

Coolant tanks are usually see-through as are screenwash tanks/

Was discussed a fair bit here (even though it says gearbox coolant, which it wasn’t.):

The Turbo Intercooler on these models has a separate cooling system, hence two expansion bottles - one for the engine coolant, the other for the IC coolant.
Great thanks for the answer Turbo intercooler expansion bottle. So do i top it up with anti freeze ?, and dose anyone know where the level mark is to top it up to? or any other information on it? thanks in advance.

Do you have a handbook for the car?

Yes been through it, but it does not say about checking it or what it is, it does not give it in the checks, i will check now i know what its called

If it needs to be topped-up, then you shoukd to investigate where the coolant has gone... there may be a leak somewhere.

Just been through the book again and its not mentioned anywhere

I don't know if it needs topping up as i cannot find a level ? Does anyone know where it is as i cannot see it? I have read all the other posts and no one says if you top up with antifreeze or where level is thanks.

Have you ever topped it up or even looked at it?
Never topped it up. Have looked and it’s about half full. I’m not convinced it needs to be full, and think it’s a coolant collector rather than an expansion tank. There are several coolant circuits: bottom of the engine, the cylinder head and the EGR cooler. These all return to the collector.

The smaller tank is indeed for the intercooler circuit / charge air cooling
And its main purpose is for aid in cooling the charge air which naturally heats up during turbocharging. It should be approx 1/2 to 3/4 full and takes the same antifreeze as the main coolant circuit for the engine.
I believe they have now split the coolant circuits into 2 one which is the main being controlled by the engine ECU and the 2nd being the charge air being controlled by the powertrain ECU as long as the levels are correct no need to keep topping up and if you have to do this I'd advise getting them checked for leaks

I could of course be mistaken, but thought the charge cooler was an air/air intercooler across the front of the car and that the extra cooling circuit is for the EGR cooler.

My old 320e was simple compared to this. Thanks for all the info gang, i am happy things all seem to be ok, it just seemed very strange it does not say in the handbook. Thanks for you info.

Did you check your inbox?
Wow, Thanks for that very informative i have skimmed through and will read in depth later, but when you see all that you know why these are top cars. Well i'm happy all's ok but it does seem funny not to have a full mark and not to be in the handbook. Thanks for all your help gang this lockdown gives me things to look for on the car, it will be great when we are back off in them again. Have fun stay safe.
