2001 S320 £6495 lotta car for the money?

Jay has a nice looking S320 CDI for sale...

Not keen on diesel engines mate, my mortgage broker has a 2003 diesel E class and it sounds like tractor whne it starts up, not my cup of tea. Also I feel I should at least get something with less miles than the coupe!

Sounds like a good priced car if everything is working as it should.

I bought one from Mercedes Direct, and it spent more time there than in my driveway - it had 62k, 1 owner fsh - and was exchanged under their 14 day plan - as it spent 9 of them in their workshop! Power steering pump packed up, and some electronics issues!!
I was recovered on a lorry, and a courtesy S320 provided - so service was good, shame about the car.

I dug out a buyers guide from a 2008 Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine ( bit light on detail as always) for the W220 and they mentioned the ball joint costing about a £1000 due haveing to replace whole arm, also mentioned electronics suspect if the rain channels blocked / damp pasenger footwell. Getting the impression that the potential costs of a poor S Class are not to be taken lightly, however I'm undeterred for now, I suppose if I want the easy life Id just go and buy a 6 month old Focus for 10 grand and be done with it!.

We can read stories as above for any presitige car make.

People have to remember now these types of cars are £6K thery were £40k, 50K, 60K cars and parts / running costs reflect this.

If we were all sensible we would be driving some boring cars :)

Good man, go and have a drive :)

I think that the overall running cost will depend on how good your local indi is.
Price of parts won't vary much I guess though.

Ofcourse there is the Miles V's Age debate....

I took a gamble on an older S class late last year. What didn' know at the time was that my milage was about to increase by a massive amount from about 1200 per month to a record 5300 last month.

I can't think of many better cars to do this kind of milage in, economical too.

I am worried that at some point it could be very expensive to repair, in fact I had to spend out last week on a speed sensor which wasn't cheap. I've taken the view that I will have to pay whatever it costs to kep it going and that It'll still work out to be around 20 times more comfortale than the new Fiesta that I could have bought - of course there's always the sensible middle ground like a C or E class of similar spec but I'm a bit of a lardass and just prefer the luxobarge!

Of all the cars I have run over the last few years (and there have been a few)it's been depreciation that has cost me dearly and, in some ways, I'd rather shell out for new bits than see my cash just disappear in depreciation - at leas I get new shiny bits this way!

An E-Class does make more sense, and that was my original choice, but the W210's rust issues have put me off a touch, but if the right one comes along at the right price (i.e 2001/2 in Silver with all the toys, Black leather and FSH) then I'll not discount it.
