Hi,

I've a 2002 E220 CDI Estate with starting issues when cold.

It has started taking many tries + too long for the starter motor to start the vehicle (gets scary sometimes).

I've replaced all 3 fuel lines last year with original MB ones which has been covered here:
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/125109-2002-e220-cdi-crank-but-no-start.html

There was no starting problem for 1 year.

There is no fuel spillage now, but I can see that a fuel line just above the fan belt is moist. Showed it to mechanic who said its not much and I might have a glow plug problem which is leading to car not starting. Do glow plugs set any DTCs or messages? Is it worth getting it scanned for codes?

There is "No Malfunction" reported by the display and all lights/ messages are OK on the instrument cluster.

I've now bought 4 glow NGK glowplugs but scared to get them removed as I've been told by mechanic that they are so common to snap!!

Please advise of a good glow plug test and any other possibilities for this issue.

Many thanks in advance.

It could be a high pressure pump leakage rather than the pipes?

I doubt a glow plug issue.

Faulty glow plug cause almost always glow light coming back after engine is started. AND like above, your car would probably start ok without one or two plugs. Could be glow plug relay, but still I think it would start. Plugs can be measured by checking resistance (ohm) of each plug (now you have ok plugs to compare).

Maybe o-ring has gone again, or then hp-pump like suggested.

One very possible thing is leaking injector. Make a leak test, easiest done like here:

Thanks for your replies. Can you check the resistance of a glow plug without taking it out.

If its not too much hassle, please write or point to an idiot's guide.

I will ask the mechanic to check for leakage at the HP pump(is it fuel pump?)

Where is the glow plug relay and does it cause any DTCs/ warnings when it fails.

Please bear in mind that it does start, it just takes an awful long crank and it seems to "rush to start" when it finally starts.

You seem to have two paraller thread on, but lets put something here too...

Best/Easiest way to test glow plugs - PeachParts Mercedes ShopForum

High pressure pump is hard to detect if its internally leaking. But your mech should be able to check the rail pressure during the start, so we know if that's the problem.

Faulty glow relay does not always show any lights.
