The 2/3 section of the rear seat on my 2000 E320 cdi estate does not fold flat anymore. When you pull the lever on top of the seat back it does not release the back for folding. The single seat section releases and fold fine. I have taken the single seat out by undoing the centre holding bracket hoping to fold the main seat back section forward in order to get at the catch but no luck! Any ideas anyone?

You should be able to go into the trunk and release the seat by manually pulling on the release. I expect there would be a cover or concealed planel behind which the lock is resident.

Thanks miro but this will not work on an estate car because there is no trunk and the seating backrest units are totally sealed and enclosed.
I would like to cure this problem without having to be brutal and break something that will be expensive to replace! (I could rip the back panel off the backrest but that would do some serious damage to the seat!)

Anyone, please help!

Try to lift the seat. a little foce applied to the underside can sometimes free a sticking mechanism.

The "manual" release involves you getting your fingers trapped under the seat and reaching around the back to force the brackets apart - best done by two people - one lifting the seat as mentioned above.

I've freed several estate car rear seats like that withoutr doing any damange so it's worth a try

Hi
Thanks for that but no result I'am afraid!

I am still looking for suggestions!

Just had a look in mine, I can not see any obvious ways to release the seat back if the lever is not working :( You can't even see the holding bracket if you climb into the back of the car, you have my sympathies. Let us know how you resolve the problem, it will probably happen to me soon
