210 or 772.6 fluid change

Good reading Television, but check out what this guy done on page two of the blog. How can someone actually make a mistake like this...

"The only hangup I had doing the change was when I replaced the pan, the front passenger side portion of the pan got a little tangled on the metal frame thing and left a gap I didnt catch until I poured 2 L into the system. A expensive puddle formed on the ground. No worries though "

Believe me there is worse than that out there, but thats life

Just had mine done on the E55.

Parts came to around £90 from the stealers

8l of Gearbox Oil
1 x Rubber Gasket
1 x Filter
1 x Copper Washer
1 x Dipstick Cap Lock

Labour Costs were £40.

As I suspected it seems that gearbox oil has never been changed on the car although it has full Merc service history.

Looked more like used engine oil than thick cherry treacle !!

Oil was drained from the pan and the torque convertor - all 8l went back in and after driving for a while and rechecking measured spot on in the higher marks on the dipstick.

Instant difference to the gearchanges - now smoother and quicker - def something anyone with an auto should look at doing at some point in car's lifetime ( every 35000 miles ? )

Could anyone confirm if the 722.6 autobox is the sameone to be found in a '98 C240 Sport? (non tiptronic) I'm 90% sure it is...

In that post, it mentions that he used the new 7 speed transmision fluid, and that it is half the price of the old 5 speed stuff.

Can anybody confirm this??

Well the 722.9 uses

Fuchs titan ATF 3353 or MB236.12 ATF 3353A001 989 4503 or Shell ATF 3353

and these are not the same

Likewise would be interested to know - is the newer stuff cheaper in the UK?

This months professional Motor Mechanic has 5 pages on the importance of using the correct oils and fluids, engines and boxes can be wrecked by using the wrong ones. Its all Hi tech now Cars Like the new Focus can only run on one type of oil in the engine.

The choice is yours

Fair point, however MB do say it's OK here, so price could be an important factor. So far looking on line I've only found prices at http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/ and there it's slightly more expensive - therefore unless it can be had cheaper, or I do some serious research on specs I'll probably stick to the original. Anyone else have prices for both types?

Had mine done at 70,000miles/four years and the tranny fluid was absolutely fine. Apparently, it's recommended at 4yrs/50,000 on the W211 E55 but then again, the autobox takes a lot more stick from the 5439cc kompressor engine.

just got my ATF and filter changed.

The gear changes are now so much smoother especially changing down gears which was sometimes a bit clunky at low speeds.

I had it done at the main Mercedes dealer. Total cost £146.65:bannana:

That was OK then and a good price too, many report back about the smoother changes
