210 suspension Avantgarde retrofit

I have a 2001 210 estate 320cdi with 7 seats.

I want to fit avantgarde springs instead of the elegance that it has at present, but mercedes tell me that i need a chassis number before i can order them as there are numerous different spring set ups depending on the car's spec. (surely there can't be that many?)

Does anyone have the part numbers for what i need or alternatively a chassis number from a similar avantgarde that i could use?

Are there alternative spring set ups that are similar to the Avantgarde-nothing too low or stiff please?

Many thanks John

Hi

If it were me i would stick with what you have, the Avantgarde can be too stiif and find of defeats the purpose of having a waft along Merc. Drive a few especially with 18" wheels prior to changing would be my advice.

Avantgarde suspension

Thanks, the Elegance suspension is just too soft for my taste, the car just does not handle properly and bottoms out over speed bumps at very low speeds. I was planning to keep the 16 inch wheels -I could imagine that going to 18 inch might well be too much. I have driven an Avantgarde with i think 17 inch wheels and that was fine.

Go to a dealership and get them to select the correct springs using the points system.

You say your car is bottoming out over speed bumps and you want to lower it? Lowering the suspension will reduce spring travel and maybe make things worse? Maybe what you want is a heavy duty suspension rather than a lower one. There are 7 different front springs depending mainly on any extra equipment fitted e.g sunroof, aircon, autogearbox etc, http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GA=722.626&CT=F&cat=65S&SID=32&SGR=052&SGN=01

Since you have an estate do you have self levelling rear suspension? http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GA=722.626&CT=F&cat=65S&SID=32&SGR=142&SGN=03

You may find all your car needs is a revamp of the standard suspension like new shocks/bushes all round? Don't know the mileage its done?

The self levelling shocks are £260EACH!!!!

PM me if you want me to send you my chassis number , i have a 2001 E320CDI Avantgarde with 7 seat option

When I had my E class (E300 TD) it did the same - it used to bottom out on the speed humps unless you were really careful.

There was nothing wrong with the suspension.

I think the diesels in particular suffer from this due to the extra weight of the engine and and they seem to ride a lot lower at the front if you take a look underneath.

To be honest it was one of the reasons why I got rid of it. When you live in London you go nowhere without going over these things and I didn't want to suffer with major damage below.

No problems whatsoever in my C Class.....I fly over the humps....mind you it is a sport and the suspension is a lot tighter.

Chassis number

Many thanks, if you could post your chassis umber that would be great.

When i say bottoming out i should have said scraping the the front valance due I think to softness of springs.

I have just been through the list of parts which are very helpful. It seems that most cars unless they are Taxis or police specs will have points that put the car in the first category. There didn't seem to be enough points on those extras listed to get above the threshold for the rears at any rate. Am I missing something?

Thanks

John

The springs are rated for standard/Elegance suspension or sports supension. There is a heavy duty option for taxis.

The spring pads are what make the fine differences in ride height due to optional extra equipment.

New springs will stop it bottoming out as they will be stiffer than old ones. been there, done that.

I have a set of Avantgarde Shocks up for sale - they are from a late facelift w208, does anyone know if they will fit a w210
