I would seriously consider getting some cheap steel or alloys of normal spec for your car and fitting them with H or V rated winters. 1. They will be cheaper-- sub £100 2. They will be a higher aspect ratio and 3. Narrower tread. The latter 2 factors will also markedly help the winter performance of the tyre. Just make sure as you go down in wheel rim diameter you leave clearance for brakes. Check your owners hand book for winter tyre dimension recommendations. I favour Nokian or VREDESTEIN as good economic winter tyre manufacturers.
The problem is that I have the upgraded sport pack which means that the fornt brake discs are of larger diameter, thus I think I need to have 17 inch wheels to get the necessary clearance. Thus I do not think I can reduce the diameter of the wheels. Hence my query.
This is a very common request in other parts of Europe where winter tyres are compulsory.
There is more than likely a winter wheel/tyre pack option for your model of car. I suspect that a visit to your local main dealer may be the best way to establish what your options are. You may even be pleasantly surprised by the main dealer prices for a set of 4 winter wheels and tyres.
Ever if you don't end up purchasing from Mercedes, you'll know exactly what you need to hunt for on ebay.
Should have spotted the "sports pack" sorry. OK if you limited to 17" DIAMETER wheels then I would go down to 225/45x17 as suggested since this means a much bigger/cheaper selection of tyres. You can derrate the tyres at least one speed group if you only intend to use them in winter conditions . Mytyres only list the DUNLOP SP WINTERSPORT 3D V XL at £196 in that 245/40 size
Mine are on 8.5J, they look ever so slightly stretched if you look closely but work fine.
They are within tolerances quoted for 225 rim width. 7.5J - 9.0J
