280SL (R107) Auto shift problem

Hi,
My 1983 280SL (LHD) auto has developed a problem with gear shifting:

When cold, she will happily shift 1>2>3 and back down 3>2>1 as normal.

However once really warmed up (say 30mins) she will only shift 1>2 and back from 2>1. She will not shift up into 3rd.

Any ideas or courses of action would be gratefully received.

Checked the fluid level? Gearbox hot, engine at idle, car level, in park.

Thanks Druk, Car is in my friends garage at the moment - hoping to have a chance to check that today.
