5G Networks Pros & Cons - Discuss

Big thing with 5g is it will improve latency and obviously data speeds. On top of this massive device connectivity/capacity and reduced costs and energy. This a must for where our future is heading..
Joe Blogs citizen will benefit from instant streaming in super duper HD but the big improvement will be for our businesses/industry.
A fast a reliable latency is a must for industries using A.I. edge computing and even more reliable connections between machines and automated/autonomous production.

Was reading a few months ago on stand alone wireless robots assisting us in all aspects of life/production - that future is round the corner dubbed the 4th industrial revolution.

Ive heard it mentioned else where the 5g is much less power hungry in that it drains the devices battery far less than other connections, this is another big move forward for autonomy.
5g stations will be full duplex. Current 3/4 stations can only either recrive or transmit signals at a time, they cant do both at the same time. Full duplex will vastly improve this walkie talkie technology. To reroute data almost instantly at the same pace will improve efficiencny.

The other big differentiator compared to 3g/4g is the implementation of Massive MIMO (MU-MIMO).

The mistake perhaps is to always equate technological improvement with societal improvement. The internet has changed society, indeed the world, in ways no-one could predict when Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web back in 1989.
History should have taught us our inherent and admirable ingenuity to develop new technologies is only matched by our total inability to predict all their consequences. :dk:
The phrase "once the genie is out of the bottle" seems apposite.

Due to the location accuracy of 5G and improvements in GPS, I don't think criminals will like being pinpointed at the scenes of crime

I wouldn't be surprised if the "govmint" mandated that everyone had to have their mobiles with them all the time ;)
Real criminals do not use smart phones.

Automated and autonomous production is all well and good (I often work within it) but no one really thinks about the humans it displaces - except for those who no longer have to pay the wages of said human, they are well happy - (makes redundant) where do they go ?...oh yes they get 're trained' ..not all of them. They basically get fired when a machine takes over. It's brutal but it's the way it's going. Be very careful which vocation your kids are planning to do in the future..it might not exist when the future comes.

4g will still be working alongside 5g
Just as we still have 1g (mobile to mobile calls, 2g (sms), 3g still being used.
Given the option ill take 5g over 4g all day

This is very true.

And it also applies to the invention of the mobile phone. And television. And aeroplanes. And cars. And firearms. And other inventions and discoveries all the way back to the sailboats of early mariners, the wheel, and fire.

This is what we humans do.

I hear you.
Trying to push my eldest into programming which will be a future proof profession. Programmable toy robots, raspberry pi's etc.. all he ever wants to do though is play Fortnite!!

Programming is pretty dull unless there's a real objective to it. What's he interested in?

Dull for adults even more so for kids! Apart from the normal kiddy stuff he has a passion for planes, loves flight simulators. Me and Mrs have discussed signing him up to local air cadets once he is at high school age. Will give him some hands on experience with airplanes and friendship with likeminded kids. Loves his battleships too! Takes that from me:)

'What is he interested in ?' is a loaded question. Without doubt we would all love to make a living doing something we loved doing in our youth and people who manage it in adulthood are the only people I am actually jealous of in this world.

Racing/Messing around with motorcycles and partying (sometimes at the same time) was what I was good at in my youth..but unfortunately not good enough to make a living out of either. So here I am doing something else that I quite like doing for a living ...which in turn has paid for the leisure pursuits that should have been my living :p

Fighting aircraft will be pilot-less soon, Commercial aircraft have gone from 3 down to 2 in the cockpit and if 'they' had their way it would be just one human in the cockpit. Learning to fly would be great for him but no guarantee of a job in 30 years time. I do believe there is a list out there of jobs that robots will not be able to do ...hairdressing is one of them I remember correctly. In my work I see many menial tasks done by humans where it is just not worth developing a robot to do it , and a lot of the 'interesting' stuff done by robots.

Well, what I'm trying to say is that if you want to switch someone onto programming (or anything else) you need to make it relevant to something they're interested in. Simply trying to direct them to do something that you think is best for them is in my view often less effective. YMMV of course.

As for programming, if you enjoy problem solving and, creating and developing algorithms, it can be a very creative and enjoyable experience.

Back to the topic guys...
Ive mentioned it on another post and we all now the real world benefits of 5g.
Im concerned with how 5g radiation is soaked up by vegatation/biologocal matter. Surely this MAY have some impact on our well being? Not enough solid research on this in my eyes. Ive seen vids of trees dying in close proximity to 5g masts!
Also seperate point any obstacle more than 10cm wide blocks the signal and foliage on trees is a big barrier hence why trees are being chopped down.
I love nature more than 5g!
