BMW 550i touring, on the hunt for C63 estate
Hi all, struggling to find info on the 6.2 E63 - google failing me.

I was looking at a facelift W204 C63 estate but am concerned it might be too small for me.

So now considering the 6.2 E63.

The facelift C63 has MCT gearbox and supposedly some engine niggled sorted - what is the scoop with the E63, are certain years more sorted?

Am I right in thinking that if they have racestart then they are MCT?

eg is this MCT?

It looks as though that car will have an MCT gearbox.

For a little more money you could have a biturbo M157 engine. Many people (but definitely not including C63 owners...) seem to think it's a better engine, though the M156 is more 'sporty' (i.e. more revvy, making its serious power higher up the rev range, and considered to sound better if that's important to you), and the M157 certainly has a better torque spread and significantly better economy.

Some early M156 engines had a head bolt problem, but that one should be fine.

from that wiki:

It is available on the 2009 SL 63 AMG and E63 AMG, and will be used for the 2011 S 63 AMG and CL 63 AMG, and the 2012 CLS 63 AMG and C 63 AMG.

so all post 2009 E63 are MCT I think?

I fancy one of the last big NA engines and I also have an LPG kit that I could potentially transfer to an NA car (don't hate me for that!)

my swatting says that up to early 2011 have the headbolt problems - the linked car is 2010. Any reason you thin it would be OK?

I wasn't aware the headbolt problems ran on into 2011; I went from M113k to M157, so never paid much attention to the M156.

If you get the dealer to give you the VIN, that will give you the engine number, which should help you to check - it could well be a post-October 2010 build, i.e. 2011 MY, car.

Also a quick read of your previous posts don't make me want one!!

^ I wonder what the actual percentage of head bolt failures there have been considering the number of M156 engines that left the plant?
You only hear about the failures on forums, not the thousands that have performed as they should. Don't write the engine off too hastily.

Very rare but as you rightly say you only hear of the failures. If it hasn't failed by now it probably isn't going to .
