Vito 6 seater
Hello all,

I’m hoping someone with a LWB 6 seater Vito could help me out.
I’m thinking of buying one but I need to know the length between the rear door and the back of the rear seats, to make sure I’d get a ktm 85 in it.
If someone who has one could kindly let me know, I’d be forever grateful.

Hi & welcome. Do you mean the Vito Long (which isn't LWB), or the Extra Long (which is)? They are 1650mm / 1880mm respectively, according to the W639 brochure. I assume the W447 (current shape) would be pretty much identical.

We have a 6-seater Long (W639) with the optional 'comfort' second row seating - this has a double seat plus a single, both of which fold/flip independently (or lift out). So you could seat 5 and have the single rear seat flipped forward to give extra load length on one side. We generally run ours with the single rear seat removed. The Comfort rear seats also recline (there are 2 separate backrests on the double seat). The standard rear seating is a single 3-seat bench.

Hi, thank you.
Unfortunately I’m a complete novice regarding the Vito, so I don’t really know what those model numbers mean.
best I can do is say it’s a 2012 Vito Traveliner, it has three seats in the front and three seats in the back. It has 110 cdi on the back and is being sold as lwb, this could mean long.
thats pretty much all the info I have.

No problem. 2012 would be a W639 - the W447 (current version) came out in 2014. There are three sizes - Compact, Long and Extra Long. The Compact and Long have the same wheelbase, however Longs are sometimes advertised (wrongly) as 'LWB'. Here's a picture showing the differences ... the Long has space added behind the rear axle, and the Extra Long has more in front of the rear axle (hence the longer wheelbase):

Vito lengths.jpg

The 110 is the least powerful ... not 100% sure about the Traveliner version but other Vitos with that engine have a lower back axle ratio, so the fuel consumption is actually a bit worse than the more powerful ones! The last 2 digits of the model number give the approximate power in bhp, so:

110 = 100 bhp (2.2 diesel)
113 = 130 bhp (2.2 diesel)
116 = 160 bhp (2.2 diesel)
122 = 220 bhp (3.0 V6 diesel)
126 = 260 bhp (3.5 V6 petrol, very rare!)

You may have confused things a little more.

Compact is the shortest.
The 'long' is mid approx 250mm longer, and is mid sized between the 3 lengths.
The 'extra long', is a longer wheel base and another 250mm longer than the long.

There is Vito and Viano, but let's stick to Vito.
The van has 2 or 3 seats up front (including driver).
The Dualiner has an extra row behind that. Generally that will be a 2+1 arrangement but in ours I've replaced that bench seat with 2 captain seats.
The Traveliner has an additional 3rd row of 2+1 behind that, again these can be exchanged for the individual captain seats.

Are you confused any less yet?
Possibly best to study eBay or such adverts to understand better.

It sounds like you want to understand the luggage space between the back of the rear seats and the tailgate. BTB 500 or I could do that, but not for a Traveliner as we only have one row of rear seats.

A Traveliner would normally be 9 seats (3/3/3 layout), although I think you could get 8 (2/3/3). Anyway I assume we're talking about 3/3/0 here i.e. no 3rd row seats fitted. As mentioned a Dualiner (like mine) would also be either 3/3 or 2/3, with no provision for a 3rd row. The difference would be 'solid' side panels (with no windows) at the back (the picture I posted above shows Dualiners).

Thanks guys. MB didn’t make it easy haha
To clarify which model vito set up I’ll need.
3/2 up front, then a row of 3 then 0.
window on the side is one window next to the driver, one next to the rear seat then the rear panel is metal.
length of what I’m looking at, autotrader list as lwb which I’ve learnt from the pictures is the middle size (wheels are in the same place)
Or if that’s not long enough to get the ktm 85 in, I’d need the long, which autotrader lists as xlwb, just to confuse me more
I know the short wouldn’t be long enough.
I’ve added pictures as an example of what I’m on about.
Good info on the numbers, I’m thinking the 110 won’t be what I go for. The one pictured is a 120, 58 plate.
thank you for your patience, I know how annoying noobs can be haha.

Yep that's a Dualiner.
All rear seats are easily removed / configured. The system in Dualiner and Traveliner is very flexible.
Drop the back rest, lift a rear lever and tilt the base, then unclip the front at the floor rail and lift clear.
With the bench, as said, one seat can be removed leaving the 2 seats. They can be removed but the weight can be an issue. The one seat cannot stand alone it clips to the 2 seats for support.
There are captain seats that can stand alone and are compatible with all floor rails.
Vito came with cloth or leather. Viano came as leather 'mostly'. The Viano leather is softer, the seats are more comfortable, and of course will fit the Vito.

Dependant on accommodating rear passengers you could always remove all rear seats and increase the load area.

I've a bed base in mine but sometime later will move things around to measure.

For economy the 2.1 engine wins, yours would be the 651 engine (post 2010) and those have some inherent issues.
The earlier 646, 2.1 engine was more reliable.
If you stick with the Dualiner there is far less chance that it was previously a taxi, and the mileage is less likely to be corrupted. From experience the Traveliner and Viano are very often clocked. More of a mini bus and ideal taxis.

The massively complicate things further the 'extras' vary greatly.
Many were as basic but then possible add ons were , steering wheel audio controls, heated front seats (sometimes just driver seat), front sun roof, rear sun roofs, parking sensors rear and often front, Comand (Mercedes Sat Nav ++ ( but is beaten by Android systems)), folding mirrors (rare), auto lights and auto wipers.

To my mind the 115 / 116 is the better choice. More power and better diff for cruising.

The engines were uprated slightly in the 2010 facelift ... before that the models were:

109 (90 bhp)
111 (110 bhp)
115 (150 bhp)
120 (200 bhp - V6)

I have a 2007 Dualiner 120 Long (6 seat), similar to your picture. A Traveliner (minibus) has windows all the way to the back and 3 rows of seats.

The internal lengths from the back of the centre seats to the tailgate are as I posted before i.e. 1650mm for the Long and 1880mm for the Extra Long. Those are brochure figures so should be correct - our van is fitted with 2-tier caging in the back so not easy to measure.

The measurement your looking for is 1.53m, that's w/o the back being reclined.
If the 2nd row were removed it measures 2.5m to my drivers seat, mine is set fairly well back.
Mine is the long, the extra long would allow approx 250mm more.

BTB, I've just seen your reply,
is it possible the 1.65m is with the floor rails that allow for fore / aft adjustment, and therefor seats pushed forward?

Those are the brochure figures (see attached scan) for the standard Dualiner, which has fixed mounts for the centre row seats. I wonder though if those are measured at floor level so don't take account of the raked seat backs?

That sounds right, the door to seat stands would allow extra. I double checked mine (I've just fitted rear DRL's so playing with the van anyway).
From door to seat back 1.53m, and less if the seat is reclined.

Thanks guys, that’s all really helpful information and I really appreciate you both taking the time to help.
Going off those figures, I need to start my search for a vito Extra long, (the actual lwb not what autotrader calls lwb.) as I’d need the rear seats fitted while transporting the bike, as the kids also ride it, so I’ve always got at least 4 people travelling. The minimum length I’d require is 183cm, so an extra long at 188cm would be spot on.

thanks again, I’m sure there will be more questions in the future, once I’ve got it and the mods start :-).

What would your opinions be on this option. I’m realising finding a Vito Long dualiner within my budget, (6k) is like finding rocking horse s...

I’ve found one so far:
2007 automatic (what’s the auto box like)
115 xlwb Mercedes vito dualiner w639.
Milage 153654
28/05/21 MOT
front rear parking sensors, ac, satnav,
4 new tyeres fitted last December
gearbox service last year.
serviced in February, new battery alternator new exhaust, new windscreen and fully carpeted

Sounds decent enough. The 115 is a good amount of power, auto box is fine (all the V6s had it as standard), AC and parking sensors are both nice to have. Worth a look.

A carpeted Dual isn't original, not that that's a problem.

Auto's are preferable, for me anyway. The manual would be better consumption but I've had 42mpg out of mine. 37 / 38 isn't to much to expect if gentle and not going too fast.
The auto's want a service (ATF oil and filter change) each £40k miles (ish). Be sure this has been completed competently with good materials.

Which sat nav, Mercedes own (Comand) are poor compared to Andoid with perhaps Tom Tom loaded. If it's Comand be sure it comes with the DVD.
I'm guessing that will have steering wheel controls, that's a nice bonus and compatible for an Android upgrade.

Climb under, the rear sub frame can suffer bad rust.

Wheels / tyres need to be load rated for insurance.

Important in my view,
be sure it hasn't been pre warmed prior to viewing, that can cover smoking at start up and faulty injectors.

Feel carefully for vibes, when cruising at around 2k revs and lower can mean auto box / torque convertor slippage.
Ideally you should haul it up hills looking for vibes, the foot brake under acceleration can mimic that.
These can develop vibes from a few places, some being more expensive than others.

I'm tracking Viano prices for a replacement but £6K seems on the high side, there is possibilities of prices dropping before long.

Thanks again

the carpet has been done by the current owner. I’m happy the auto box are a good option, I too prefer it to manual, my car is also auto. I’m going to see it this weekend, so I’ll take the list of things you wrote to check over. Hopefully all going well, I’ll bring it home. My budget is £6k, this is up for £5.5k, so I’ll try and shake his hand (from a 2m gap) :-) at £5k.CC31AFFC-F387-4107-A630-961DFD221663.jpeg427791B7-4C5E-4203-BB38-B883A09DC6F2.jpegAF5B4797-98D1-4D90-94EA-DC11F6818423.jpeg4E64D099-1216-40BE-94A3-7B5E62496211.jpeg62E7CAF3-993A-4C99-807A-1B4783CCEA69.jpeg62E7CAF3-993A-4C99-807A-1B4783CCEA69.jpegF326A530-54E7-453F-B424-A348D4F899B3.jpegB90E3CEF-D1E2-41C0-A3FB-24A39045BCF2.jpeg

A few comments on that one. First (and most serious) it has a mix of colour coded and black exterior trim all over the place, which might suggest cheap repairs at some point. E.g. front bumper is colour coded, rear bumper is black. Look at the side trims and door handles, etc. Either everything should be black or it should all be body coloured (silver):

1590655895909.png

1590656042568.png

Both front parking sensors nearest the number plate are either missing or have been replaced with non colour-coded ones:

1590656190024.png

On the plus side it has the interior 'comfort pack' which gives the roof lining at the back, side moulding panels over the wheel arches, rear speakers, etc. The panel with speakers under the front seats is a DIY job. Speaking of which there's something odd about the COMAND and multifunction steering wheel ... I'm guessing these were retro-fitted as there's no phone cradle (which should be to the left of the instrument cluster), and the wheel doesn't look right. Interior of mine which is September 2007 so very similar age (no COMAND, but you can see the wheel and phone cradle):

vito-03.jpg

So check the COMAND and all the steering wheel controls work OK! Also check the instrument cluster carefully - mine started intermittently 're-booting' while driving, couldn't be repaired, and eventually had to be replaced.

Make sure both front windows operate smoothly as the regulators can give problems.

Not personally keen on the roof rails as the Vito is just under 2 metres high without them so fits into all car parks etc. (which can be handy).

It looks like he has repaired / replaced a few things.
My thoughts are that the sliding doors are from a Viano.

No phone cradle is an advantage as if you upgrade to Android that is BT and the cradle is redundant and the additional page for it on the dash menu isn't present.
But as BTB' check all functions correctly with the steering controls, if it's a DIY upgrade he may not have wired through the spiral and coded to the van.
The steering wheel looks like a repair / upgrade. No problem mine has been, but it might indicate high mileage. MOT history is good for looking for discrepancies. It's easy to pay low mileage prices for high mileage Vi's.

The 'velvet' rear lining looks like a good job, but look for saggy bits. I've learned on my boat that sometimes the glue doesn't take.

I have reasons but for me it's gotta' be a tailgate and not the barn doors.

The parking sensors are original, and for the fronts that's a must. Even if faulty at least a repair to oem spec is possible. But as BTB, with ignition on get someone to walk across them while stationary, they initiate below 10KM/hr (I think is the figure).

Tbh I would have serious concerns with a van that has been messed with so much. Hidden Gremlins become more likely, but I've done a fair few things to mine and don't consider it has those hidden Gremlins.
'But' any new owner does have issues of understanding my installations, even if I do drawings of them as I go. An independent Merc specialist isn't going to enjoy fault finding on any non standard stuff, in the event.

If the seller will provide the VIN you can interrogate what was installed at manufacture. That can be very useful, for no valid reason though many sellers won't provide it.
Here you could check for the Comand, steering controls, even the diff ratio.

Another point I forgot to mention. The 'Long' version will go on most ramps, where the 'Extra Long' won't. I had my earlier Viano rejected by a few and that left me looking for a commercial repairer that could accommodate.

As an aside, BTB you have the auto lights. does that mean you also have the auto wipers? Is that then a reasonable assumption that auto light also means auto wipers when I'm looking for my replacement?
That is an extra I'm keen for.

This is all very helpful information, thank you.
I have the MOT history and the VIN. It looks ok to me, but I’m no expert. I’ve said I to him I will take a look this weekend, I’ll be sure to check everything you guys have advised.83170779-BFB9-408A-AF46-9BBE47C621B0.jpegE199F21F-32D8-4CD1-ACE0-9BF12EAE8B71.jpeg
