Guys, any info on fitting a 6 speed box from a W203/W210 into a W202/W208?

Wondering what's involved. I'm imaging the props are different lengths, possibly the linkage is different too. No idea about clutch actuation ie, pedal, master & slave cylinders etc. Any advice, comments greatly received.

I looked at this and abandoned the idea as it was too much work, my BIL did all the research so I'll ask him. I've just fitted a W208 race gearbox with different ratio's so I have a longer second cog to improve the 0 -60 times, car is a different beast with this gearbox on but I was lucky enough to be offered it from a race car someone was breaking in Scotland.

Interesting Flango. I have a spare Getrag dogleg which will fit and is very doable but don't want a direct top, thus this thread on a six speeder.

You can buy the w202/8 with the 6 speed box from factory, so you just need someone breaking one.

The propshafts are a different length, the clutch master cylinder and pedal box are the same parts. The 6 speed has a concentric slave cylinder inside the gearbox.

The nice thing with the 6 speed, is how easy you can make up a quickshift for it. I now fit these into w124's, totally transforms the driving experience.:thumb:

I actually looked at the Getrag dog leg too then this one came up which was a straight swap, came out of a very famous rally drivers 208 track car :-)

Thanks Carat.

Carat. What about flywheels, do you reckon there would any difference between a 5 sp & 6 sp one? Personally, I'd think not but I'm not certain.

Carat, any idea what the 6 speeder is like when it comes to strength in comparison to the 5sp for example?

I've been looking into this as well.

As far as I know there are 2 types of 6 speed box, the earlier one which fits the M103/4 bolt pattern, and a later one from the M112 engines which won't?

Any chance anyone has a list of what boxes came from what cars? And their gearbox numbers would be usefull too.

You're firing on all four there Phil, as that's the sort of info I'm after too. Am I correct in saying the M271 is a similar block to the M111 and that OM611 & 612 has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the W124/M111?

Very strong, I've got 557 ft lb going through one in the diesel.

Yep, all correct. Which engine do you want to put it behind?

I did have a list somewhere of what came in what, but there are only 4 versions of that gear box.

1 comes on the m112 v6 which has a different bellhousing pattern to what we need, 2 come on the 4 cyl cars, and 1 comes behind the 270cdi engine (strongest rated).

Carat, I presume you are using the C270CDI box for that torque output? I'm considering fitting one to the M111 C230K. Accepting that the conversation is a fairly basic swap, next on the agenda will be selecting the 6 speeder with the most suitable ratios to match the 3.27 diff. Wouldn't be too surprised if the box for the OM612/C270CDI is the most ideal?

Believe it or not, my gearbox came from c180 compressor! Most cars with the 6 speed use a 3.07 diff, and the ratio's are not that different between them.

I can tell you 5th and 6th are very close together...

O.k., that sounds good and maybe even better, as I would be using a 3.27 diff. I'm presuming 5th is 1:1 and 6th is around 0.85 or something like that?

Edit: Do you know if the C270CDI engine is canted? If so, I'm presuming I can't use that box on a non canted M111?

5th is a 1 : 1 but I cant remember what 6th is, 0.85 sounds about right though. On the motorway I only drop 600rpm on the change from 5th to overdrive 6th.

The m111 and the om612 lean by the same amount, you can swap the gearbox'es between them.

If you use the standard gear lever setup, try to get one from a w202. I dont use it, but I think they differ in length between models. They are cast alloy too so a pain to chop up.

The propshaft on the 6 speed cars has a larger pcd on the rubber couplings, so you'll need that too.

I've got 2 swaps coming up so I'll take some pics if you like? Ones a 300ce, the other is a C37.
