6 speed gear selector problem

hi all

my problem is a mad one i have a 2001 c class 220 cdi 6 speed manual the problem is that the cars gear selector has started to play up ive had a look under the car and found the selector cable that comes from the inside of the car has a plastic bracket on the cable that sits in to a metal bracket that is connected to the gearbox has broken in half and wont let me select the gears been to dealers today and they said i cant get the cable i have to order the whole thing ie the gear selctor that comes from the inside of the car if that makes sense that will cost me 303 plus vat

i want to know are the gear selectors all the same on all 6 speed c classes or are they different cos i have a breaker close by who said i can have it for 60 if it is the same
