The search isn't working so have added this, sorry if this question has been answered.

I have the 722.6 dipstick (similar to this: Mercedes Gearbox Automatic Transmission Dipstick Tool 722.6 140589152100 1200mm | eBay) and I want to ensure I have the right amount of oil in the gearbox, however, it feels like I push it too far and it bends at the bottom of the tub and turns a corner in the sump. I can feel 2 stops but not sure which one I should stop that.

Can anyone tell me how much of the dipstick actually goes into the tube, so I know if I have pushed it too far. Effectively from the top of the hole in the below picture, to the end of the stick, can anyone tell me the length please?

I have a 2004 350 with the earlier 3.7 litre engine and my dipstick is exactly 0mm long, just a plastic cap that covers the hole. I check the oil level via the cars computer so a dipstick isn't supplied as standard.

All you have to do is press a couple of buttons on the steering wheel, make sure the car is standing level and the car measures the oil level for you and tells you how much oil to add if any :)

The OP wants to check the ATF not the engine oil...

The dipstick should only go in so far as the little diamond moulding, just above the measurement section, stops it going in past the tube bottom where it enters the ATF sump. You may still have some of the springy bit sticking out of the top of the tube.

Yes, I have some of the bendy stuff sticking out, but it feels like I have pushed past the stop, it may just be bends in the pipe but I'm not 100% sure.

So I would like to work out how much of the dipstick is in the tube, so I know I haven't pushed it too far.

I hope this makes sense guys!

When you push it down and it bottoms out, if it is in correctly you will have oil showing on the black or red portion at the end of dipstick: height of mark will depend on ATF temperature at time of reading.
If ATF level mark is above that portion it could be you have gone in too far!!

I have an original MB dipping tool and there is a quite a lot of the tool hanging out the end of the tube. The link you posted appears to be OK so should insert quite smoothly until the end where it will be a hard stop.

Yes, I have a lot of the tool hanging out of mine, but want to know the what length of dipstick is inside the car from bottom of dipstick to top of spout. Mark, I think your car has the same engine as mine how much dipstick is in the engine with yours?

Holy crap, I'm not sure if I am going crazy, but is the pipe in the picture the pipe that goes to the engine????? and not the transmission?!!

And the transmission infact is the 2nd pipe with the black lid and red tab underneath?!!!

Why is such a simple thing made so bloody awkward by MB ? I know the 722.X gearbox is used in many vehicles world wide can the all be this awkward to check the fluid level ?

I too bought a dipstick to check the ATF on my gearbox and every time I tried to uses it the results were not accurate or consistent enough to be reliable.

I think it is, that's why I thought you were talking about the engine oil level, not gearbox :)

I can't be excact on this particular car, but I've done a full oil change in my Grand Cherokee with the same gearbox (8 litres worth with the torque converter) . Theres a few vids on youtube for this.
Bought the dipstick from some ebay seller like you. Each car will/may have a different lengh tube so you cant go buy whats hanging out the top.
You have to have the car on level ground and get the oil to the correct temp (very important). For me that was a 20 min drive in the summer and I have use of a long thermo couple so I could attach it to the dip staick and get the tempreture. Plus you'd be surprised how quick the oil starts to cool down when the car has stopped for a few mins.
As for insereting the dipstick, its engine off and just buy feel till it taps out and seeing your oil level is reading on the stick somewhere in the correct region. Apparently its not good to overfill.

Hope this helps a little

The ATF tube is very narrow and has a sealed cap. I have a normal Engine dipstick fitted for Oil

I may be wrong but I thought ATF level was checked with engine running or was that one of the others I have had in past?

ATF level is checked when up to temp (80c), engine running and selector in P or N

PCN1 & Mark you need to check your facts before offering advice there may not always be someone around to provide correct info and it may be costly to others on here.
When I posted I said "I may be wrong" knowing I wasn't, but at least it lets others know there may be some doubt!!

I followed the line with the black cap and red tab, that went to the gearbox, the other I guess goes to the engine!

So looks like I put 5L of ATF into the engine sump! What a **** a feel like.

I am now completely draining the engine oil (it was due an oil change anyway). I checked the level of the ATF on the now correct pipe and it showed as half way between the max cold and minimum hot, so I have sucked about 750ml out. Let the car sit a bit and check the ATF level, now showing as below minimum. So added about 400ml of fresh. Car is now at an angle now so will check ATF level once I've done the engine oil change.

Fingers crossed the car stops the weird rumbling it was making in reverse.
