722.6 SL350 R230 dipstick length question

PCN1 & Mark you need to check your facts before offering advice there may not always be someone around to provide correct info and it may be costly to others on here.
When I posted I said "I may be wrong" knowing I wasn't, but at least it lets others know there may be some doubt!!

The only slight miss -understanding I see may come from checking the oil temp with a thermocouple which I had attched to the dipstck, engine off at this point so the thermo couple (which is a just a very thin wire) wasnt caught up in the box and causing damage. When I was satisfied the temp was correct, then yes its engine back on, move the gear stick etc and then insert your level stick. Aploiges to the OP if there was any confusion.
As I mentioned, plenty of videos on youtube for the OP to watch first.

that's cool I use the doubt bit a lot now as my memory at 61 definately aint what it used to be:)
I have one of those 15 quid infra red thermometers its a great tool around an engine.

The search isn't working so have added this, sorry if this question has been answered.

I have the 722.6 dipstick (similar to this: Mercedes Gearbox Automatic Transmission Dipstick Tool 722.6 140589152100 1200mm | eBay) and I want to ensure I have the right amount of oil in the gearbox, however, it feels like I push it too far and it bends at the bottom of the tub and turns a corner in the sump. I can feel 2 stops but not sure which one I should stop that.

Can anyone tell me how much of the dipstick actually goes into the tube, so I know if I have pushed it too far. Effectively from the top of the hole in the below picture, to the end of the stick, can anyone tell me the length please?

I have just posted the same question as I too couldn’t locate a previous question on a search. The tool I have bought is 1220mm and it bottoms out with about 8-10 cm sticking out of the dipstick tube. I will measure this for you tomorrow.

Hi just a quick update on this. So it turns out I was infact using the dipstick in the wrong hole. The hole for the transmission oil dipstick is infact just under and behind the engine cover, it is lower than the engine dip stick. The cover of the engine dipstick will be black with a flat top.

Also the reason for the rumbling feeling was from a collapsed leaky damaged engine mount, so replacing both sides and no more rumbling feeling.

Thanks all for the help!

Now I know why I make it a rule never to open the bonnet on my car
