'87 W124 AMG Hammer 6.0 litre 4 cam 1 of 13

The last Hammer that sold in the UK to a Collector in Ireland, late last year, sold for 32k. Allegedely, that car had lost it's original bottom end of the engine, had replacement Recaros, had lost it's original body colour etc - but, crucially, it had been restored to excellent condition. Moreover it was a series 1 DOHC engine, 5.0 rated at 340bhp.

Aah the grape vine at its best.....some info correct and some way off beam;)

At least i used the word 'allegedly'.

Not like those who slated my Hammer in the 'Missing RHD Hammer' thread. There is someone out there who put out word that the Hammer i own was written off, just prior to the sale of the other Hammer.....strange timing to put that sort of rumour out....

I don't think I'd be willing to pay that much for exclusivity alone. The body kit and interior are dated. An E60 (W124) would make a lot more sense.

I agree, Having a little bit of Knowledge of these cars, I would add that the E60 AMG (W124) is a much better put together car, and when driven hard, would stand above the Hammer, but nevertheless, this Hammer is Rare and judging by the pictures, also lovely.

The quality of the E60 AMG is primarily the quality of the 500E....AMG did nothing to the car except bore the engine to 6.0, add high lift cams, upgrade fuel/timing mappings accordingly and add revised springs/shocks/struts/roll bar.

No chassis changes, no ground effects, no special interiors (except Limiteds, again part of the 500e package not the e60 package). The E60 AMG model has very low man-hour inputs from AMG. All bolt on upgrades.

The Hammer on the other hand....it took over a 100 man hours just to fit the V8 DOHC into the bay ! The consider the drivetrain changes, fitting the w126 differential, full ground effects, interior reworks, suspension upgrades.....the Hammer is probably a car that ranks highest in terms of AMG input/man time.

Absolutely no doubt the 500E/e60 is a more refined car that is put together far more cleanly than the Hammer...but so it should be, the 500e being a (Weissach) production line car.
