89 230TE Ticking transmission ?

Can anyone suggest causes of a ticking noise from the transmission ? It seems noticeable when the car is cold and will go after a while. It is related to road speed (rather than engine speed) but its difficult to work out exactly where its coming from.

Any suggestions on where to start looking would be good, thankx.

Last time I had something like that , not on a MB, it was the Speedo cable on the way out. Noticeable at low speeds but not at high. Just a thought.

Could be the wheel nuts catching on the hand brake shoe retaining springs.
