You should be ok with 8x17's, what is the offset?

AMG fitted 17x8 ET28-30, see my chart in the sticky. Using 235/45R17.
There is no logical reason for having dissimilar tyre widths on your car. If you have to replace either, replace the 215s.

Can I have a rant about saying 'J' in rim widths??
J is not a unit of measure, but inches are. I'm called on a daily basis with people mentioning 'jay'...
The casting might have 8Jx18H2, so I often wonder why people don't ask for 18H diameter wheels, but it hasn't caught on yet..
J/JJ/K etc is a code used to determine the tyre bead profile, H/H2 is the profile of the rim hump.
J - pah!

If you research AMG 124 cars there is a guide that shows the modifications that are required to ensure wheels do not foul the body work.

These include:

1. front wing spacers

2. a stop inserted onto the shocker rod to limit the compression

3. modifications to front arches lips and mod to inner arch bulge with the deft use of a hammer at a strategic point.

4. mod to rear arch by cutting away some metal and rejoining again.

So, more complicated than at first seems to ensure total freedom from fouling.

if you keep to the original rolling radius (or at least very close to it) then 8" rims will fit the front of a W124 that hasn't been lowered with no body modifications at all and no fouling.

How much effect lowering by 40mm will have I'm not sure but the AMG body mods were not just for practical purposes they were also for effect.

Ive lowered mine using h&r's, 60mm drop at the fron but I offset that by increasing the size of spacer. My car has the wheel arches rolled and spacers used to flare them and with 235/45/17 on a 8" rim et30 the front used to rub under hard braking. Im now running 225/45/17's on a 8.5" et30 rim with no problems. Im not totally sure how that works, but there you go.
