95 W124 E280 estate light problem

Have developed a small light problem recently- when the boot is open there is no problem- as I close the boot the rear reg number lights come on as well as front dashboard and heating control/ electric windows illumination- cannot turn then off unless I open the boot- subsequently on leaving the car after switching it off and removing keys the lights remain on and the lights on warning buzzer buzzes- a minor frustration but the flat battery is a right pain!

Broken wire shorting at the tailgate perhaps, you would have to investigate, see pictures in link below.

Definitely tailgate wires. There are looms on booth sides

The easiest way to replace them is to do them one at a time. A good yank on each wire up inside the headlining will show you which need doing - the broken ones will pull right out

Thanks for the help, will strip the trim down and get a look- thought that might be the problem
