99 RON

Yes you are correct hence I wrote not every station had super back then so a little 95 was used in emergencies.
Weird, I ran my E46 M3 on 95 for the 3.5 years I owned it, never got pinking…only had 97/98 through it a handful of times too. Unless earlier cars were more tolerant of the lower octane (mine was a 2001).

Advised by who? That would be the obvious question :) In my view, the perceived advantages of V-Power over Momentum are just smoke and mirrors, particularly when the difference between the two in cost is (at the moment) 23.3p/litre.

For that kind of additional cost, I want to see a discernible difference in economy or performance and the truth is, I simply don't (and never have). Shell are playing people for fools with their pricing, which might have been fine when they were the only people selling V-Power, but these days they have competition.
Back in the day I had a mk1 SEAT Leon Cupra R (the 1.8 turbo engine) which, the manufacturer recommended, should be run on 97 RON or better. I eventually had it mapped by Revo who said it should then be run on 98 RON or better. In those days the difference between VPower and Tesco 99 (that was before they called it Momentum) was less than 10p/litre IIRC. I have no empirical evidence to back this up but I'd swear I got better MPG out of a tank of VPower than out of the Tesco stuff. No discernable performance difference.

Is there any difference among 99 octane fuels other than price? V power claim cleaning properties. I cannot find similar claims for Momentum, Texaco Supreme 99, Essar 99, Total Excellium 99, etc.

I think all fuel have cleaning additives and detergents theses days.

Mainly knock resistance, if you watch the video I posted earlier it's all in there.
