A BMW/Merc. You're not gonna like it!

Apart from the horrible steering wheel that looks really good!

Definitely some engineering know-how went into producing that. What an impressive achievement!

I take my hat off to the feller, but why go to all that effort and just sell it.....
?

Maybe He gets enjoyment from the build itself...

Yup that looks quite impressive, not so sure about the combination of it having done motorway miles and the steering needing attention though!

How much power does that engine put out?

The years taken doing my RR was fantastic, I was machining parts one day, casting parts another, the the spraying and all the rest, priceless

286bhp in standard form when running correctly!

So about 20 bhp more than an E36 coupe, plus the V8 sound track

I'm really impressed at the ambition to do this.

There is a concern that he has chosen the 4 litre which suffers from nikasil bore wear problems. The later 4.4 litre has no such problems.

Hopefully he did a leak down test before installing.

Thats not necessarily true...thankfully. BMW did rectify the Nikasil problem in the late 90's on the 3.0 and 4.0 V8's under the BMW warranty although not all onwers had the work done.

If the owners of the Nikasil engine used quality fuel in the car from day one it would take a very long time for the bore wear problem to show, if at all.

My car had a new engine a few years ago fitted by the main dealer despite it being 9 years old!! The car has done 104k but the engine has only done 14k!

btw Big X, I bought my car in August from a guy down in Somerset, lovely part of the country.

That's the kind of thing that if I were rolling in cash I'd buy, stick a load of hidden cameras in then get it booked in to my local merc dealer for service...

I like it , it looks nicely done !

If anyone was going to buy it , they'd need to ascertain exactly what ' a little bit of wiring ' really was !! ;)

to be honest, i hate BMW's but BMW engines you cant argue with....

yes you are right about the head nickasil issue, but sure it will have been sorted by now..

cool little project..

Since the position of the Merc steering box is always a problem on v8 transplants--- just ask Ian Walker!!--- I'd like to see the steering mods first. Integrating the BMW engine and gearbox management systems into the Merc electrics must have been a challenge also . LOOKS TIDY THO!

The steering box issue is a pain. I have found that if you use a steering rack from a CLK or the likes you can do away with the box. The rack sits just behind the engine cross member. With some universal joints you can route the steering shaft to the rack and miss the exhausts. Doable but very fiddly.
