As the title suggests had a bit of a mini disaster today!

My wife ordered a new Mini Cooper S convertible at the start of the year, and due to wait/build times it was finally booked in for delivery today at 1pm :bannana:

As expected the guy turns up at 1pm and I could see a nice Blue blob outside just as expected.

Went to the door to find a nice new Cooper S, but with a hardtop, i.e not a convertible!!!!

Much to our surprise the dealer had 'forgot' to include the word 'convertible' on the paper order form, and ordered the car exactly to our spec minus the roof!

After looking at the options once I’d given them a very stiff talking to, including factoring in the wait time for a new convertible to our spec, we've decided to take the hatchback with a reasonable amount of cash compensation, enough to pay for our holiday to Berlin next week including spending money :)

So it's not all that bad after all, plus it’s still a very nice motor to boot!

It was quite a strange conversation telling the driver he had bought the wrong car even though the registration numbers matched!

Will post some pics tomorrow!

Well at least it worked out in the end. Its a shame though, i hope the chap realised the cost of his 1 word mistake!

That really is incredible. They're lucky you were so accommodating, I know I wouldn't have been - not for something so fundamental as a convertible over a fixed roof. Glad you're happy with the outcome - that's all that matters. Enjoy.

And I assume that would be the latest model anyway as the convertible is still the 1st version?

Nice one mate. Let us hope they put the right engine in it.

By the way should this not have been in "Other Marques"???:D :D

Not as bad as a friend of mine who ordered a new V70 from Ireland only to find that the steering wheel was on the wrong side.

The thing that strikes me as odd in this is that the Salesman didn't notice the difference in price when he filled out the car order and his commission forms..??

Yep, it is quite a major balls up!

The good thing is that the hatchback is the new model where the soft top would have been the 1st generation.

Quite interested to see how it drives seeing as we've only ever driven the soft top.

I hope you got massive discount because you're helping the dealer a lot. He would otherwise have had a car sat there, which he couldn't de-register and owing him a lot of money compared to a new one...

The problem is there is a long wait time for new MINI's so the dealer could have easily sold it at list price and not lost a penny (other than the cost of delivery to me), even though it would have had 140miles on the clock, they are still selling like hot cakes.

The unfortuante thing is this put me in a slightly weaker position, but overall the outcome was OK.

I wouldn't fancy the dealer retro fitting that option - best you came to an agreeable deal!

That is supposing that the potential buyer is prepared to compromise:
- on the fact that it is not a new car and that they will not be the 1st registered owner
- on spec and colour as from what you're saying you ordered quite a few extras...

Ask yourself whether you would have done the same if it were you ???

As long as the wife is totally 100% happy with the vehicle then that should be ok. I know I wouldn't be. I've sattled for 2nd-best too many times in my life...

Hello,

Agree with wallingd, no way if I had ordered a soft top would I have accepted the tin top even with a big discount.

When the suns out......you will always wish..

Did you at least get the full sunroof option.

I would have rather waited, and had a loaner off them for the time it took to arrive.

Bottom line is you and your wife are happy. I look forward to seeing some pictures.

Regards
John

If you bought it (rather than leased it, etc) then I reckon you may end up being better off, as the residuals may well be stronger than the mk1 convertible. Probably a nice profit when it comes time to sell. ;)

Glad it worked out to your satisfaction.

We went and had a look in the local MINI dealer (not the one where we bought it from) at the difference between the Mk1 and the Mk2 tonight, and there are quite a few differences I didn't notice before, so we are generally 'happy'.

On the plus side when we ordered it, we had no intentions of my car becoming a convertible, so it's not as though we will be short of a soft top when the Aston Roadster arrives in a few weeks :D (as long as Helen doesn't want to drive it now   )
