Car
Now various and sundry
A friend selling his car on Piston Heads was bombarded with interest within an hour of the advert going live. Except all these contacts requested a car inspection report from various sites (at a cost obviously). Transpired that this scam had recently been raised on PH, but was a new one to me. All interest ended in the car when said friend he was prepared to do a Car Vertical check but nothing else.

So the potential buyers wanted the seller to pay for a report on the car ? That will put the seller out of pocket and potentially be a waste of his time .
What is the scam though ? (Unless they are naming a fraudulent company for the report ?)

Scammers are low lives, they have no life that's why they prey on honest people.

Presumably the "buyers" own the site (if it exists at all) and collect whatever the costs you pay but have no actual interest in buying the car at all. Possibly also they are able to collect your bank details.

The site might be genuine, and the scammers might be getting a referral fee from the car check website?
Hardly seems worth the trouble, I still don’t get it.

I've seen a guy on youtube fall for this scam, it is becoming quite common. Generally the sites they try and force you to get a car check from are fake and designed to pocket your money and won't provide you with a report. That is why the contact stopped as soon as your friend said he was going to use Car Vertical only (the correct response to these kind of scams). As soon as they have your money the contact will stop and they move onto their next victim, they have no interest in the car and are likely working overseas. Only use legitimate sites for car checks and one of your choosing.
