Not Karl Benz's daughter, but Emil Jellinek's - and the association was with Daimler, not Benz. Jellinek, a businessman from Vienna, bought several cars from Daimler in the late 19th century and drove a Daimler Phoenix in the Tour de Nice under the pseudonym Mercedes. When he later ordered 36 cars from Daimler to sell in Austria-Hungary, France and America he insisted that they be named after his daughter.
