I have a 2000 A140 and had intermittent spluttering/stalling of the engine at low revs, stalling, and finally problems starting. I took it to a garage and after diagnostics he said my ECU may need replacing, and/or the EGR valve has a problem.

ECU/MAF

I got a second opinion and got the actual diagnostic codes, which were P0100-001 & P0100-004. Through a bit of research this does actually turn out to be the MAF (mass air filter) but this is inbuilt in to the ECU. I sent this to ECUtesting to be repaired and have received it back and fitted it.

STILL SOME PROBLEMS

On the whole the problem has been significantly reduced, but I still have intermittent splutter problems starting and splutter/stalling when I floor the accelerator from low revs, even more pronounced when from idle in neutral (no problems if I ease it down, just if it is a quick burst, which may explain the problems starting).

WHAT NEXT? OXYGEN SENSOR OR EGR VALVE?

I have read elsewhere that when you have had problems with your MAF, you may also need to get the front Oxygen Sensor (LAMBDA) replaced. Would this tally with the problems I am still getting, or could it be the EGR valve? Something else?

Many thanks

Tried a coil rail yet ?

We did the ECU on our a190 which was great , then about a year later it started spluttering when you accelerate , put a new coil rail on and all was good

Get it on a STAR machine and it will tell you more or less what is wrong with it rather than just codes.

Thanks fellas.

Howard - Who will have one of these STAR machines? Are they Mercedes only or will independents have the kit? Before going down that route is the coli rail easy to check?

How would I go about cleaning the throttle body? Rank amateur here, sorry.

This problem only occurs when I floor the accelerator and when starting.

Take off the air intake and expose the throttle flap. Remove it then clean it.

A140 suffer from blocked breather, can be seen in the form of water droplets inside the oil filler cap, or even beige stuff.
the breather is built into the rocker cover.
A140 is also known for stretched timing chain, noticable when you start the engine.
