A170 CDI loss of power

Help,

I have A170 CDI 1999, been scratching my head for days now as have lack of power problem appear under weird circumstances. It only happens when I get the car up into fifth gear and hit 3,000 rev. Once i hit the magic 3,000 in fifth gear the rest of the gears will then have this problem and all power is lost though out the range. If I don't hit 3,000 revs in fifth gear the car is fine and dandy and is just like it should be. I find the only way to get the power back once this has happened is to pull over and switch the engine off and re-start it.

Would appreciate any advice as this is sending me up the wall and motorways are now a no go for this little car!!!!

Have you had it on a STAR ( not a generic reader ) and had the fault codes read ?

If not , that would be my first port of call .

Not as yet but plan on tomorrow as soon as garage opens. Just wondering if i am being a little dumb and if any one else has had a similar problem.
