Just brought a spoiler to put on my car.
Is there any particular tape I should use to stick this on?
Anyone can recommend one?

Thanks all.

Halfords of all places!

2 years ago I bought some 'Trim tape' from Halfords, for my DTM side badges.

It was only about £5 and completely bomb-proof, ive actually tried to remove them since to no avail. Ive also used it on other items which have not moved an inch! its a darkgreen/black colour.

Get a roll and keep some kind of weight on the spoiler overnight and it should outlast the car :)

When I put the A class spoiler on (Factory item I might add), I was advised by the guy who sprayed it up for me to stick it with the tape provided but also to use some sikaflex to bond it on. He says that many people dont do this and when the car is parked in sunshine on a hot day, the spoilers have been known to come off!

I presume the spoiler is for cosmetic reasons only.
If it was to provide an actual useful downforce at speed, I would have thought that adhesive tape of any description would have failed.
Surely there needs to be a proper fixed mechanical bond (ie. screws/bolts/rivets etc) between the spoiler and the car for it to work with any degree of efficency.
Or am I missing the point here?

I don't think the forces upon these types of spoilers are that great, plus the modern bonding methods are pretty much as strong as any form of conventional fixing - stronger sometimes!

Eg, think of the chassis contstruction methods of cars like the Lotus Elise!

I'd personally nip past a local bodyshop with a few quid, they must use this sort of adhesive all the time and would no doubt save you hunting around and ordering more than you need, etc. ;)

An adhesive bond can only ever be as strong as the bond between the top coat of paint and the body metal beneath.
I cant see how a spoiler fixed with adhesive can ever be mounted as well as with proper fixings like nut and screw or rivet.

I guess it can be, just think of the contact area.

Typically spoilers are held in with just a few tiny bolts (4 or 6), probably no larger than 8 or 10mm.

I wouldn't want to try and pull the paint off a panel, let alone over a surface the size that would adhered to :o

Bar high performance cars how many spoilers actually have that much affect on the downforce of the car? Alot of the more 'cosmetic' type spoilers will achieve only a minor difference on the downforce of the car, and so don't have that much in the way of forces acting on them.

Look at the performance of typical cars with and without the spoiler option and there is very little difference...

Didn't a fairly small spoiler have a pretty big effect on the old Audi TT?

Got a link to the spoiler ? :)

Im looking at getting one of these spoilers for my c230k. Is the item flexible? Does the boot lid have to be perfectly flat?

Just my opinion of course, but to me, the cosmetic addition of a spoiler on a Mercedes Benz is worse than the addition of multi-drainpipe exhausts on a Saxo or 106.
Just so wrong.
But thats me..................

Any good quality double-sided tape should do it. My C200K has a CF spoiler fitted with DS tape been on over 18 months with no probs. Just make sure you cover the outside edge all round before fixing, then use gaffa tape to secure the fixed spoiler in place overnight - next morning it's stuck like sxxt to a blanket.

You could try the two sided sticky tape that they do for numberplates (the thin type) or even better hot silicone. The silicon you can reheat and remove from the car.

By the way member e55, I tried to send a reply somewhere just enquiring if you have sold the w210 e55 or is it still for sale?

Thanks
