I have never been one for private plates but would like to put some on my C200 to hide the year and wind up a friend of mine.....I havent got the foggiest where to start, whats the procedure regarding dvla ? and whats the cheapest it can be done for ? cheers, lovin this site btw

Go on to the DVLA website and they pretty much explain how to do it all. The cheapest plates they sell including VAT and transfer fee are £255.:thumb:

Thanks sweetpea, 250 seems a bit steep just for a whind up so think I'll stick with me 05 plate.

Firstly welcome to the site!

You have to bear in mind that £80 of that cost is the fee to assign / transfer the number to your car. So £255 plus the cost of the number plates (another £20 or so) is what it would be from the DVLA.

Then everytime you change cars, it's either another £80 to transfer or £105 to take the regstration off onto a certificate (also known as retention). If you find something you like it can be quite nice to have on the car. £250 is at the cheaper end of the market for private plates. You may find some 'Irish' numbers for about £50 but you still need to pay the transfer fees and you're left with a number plate that probably doesn't mean anything to you!

Oh, and if you're looking at winding someone up keep in mind that you cannot put any plates that make a car look younger than it is.

So you can put a plate from the 70's on your 90's car, but not a 52 plate...

You still need to pay the £80+ vat assignment fee on top of the price on speedy reg.

As mentioned you cant make your car appear newer / younger than it is so you can only put a 05 or older plate on your car.

Yes, the last plate I bought from speedy cost £150 all in. Not bad for a dateless plate..

Just to clarify, VAT is payable on the cost of the registration (in most cases), but not on the transfer/retention/assignment fees.

So if you see a plate that attracts VAT advertised for £100, the full cost to put it on your car will be at least £200 [£100 + £20 (VAT) + £80 (transfer fee)]. Plus the cost of getting the plates made up.

If the registration is currently held on a retention certificate, you will probably be charged £105 rather than £80 so that the vendor recoups their intial outlay.

Also, if the registration is currently on a car in Northern Ireland (which will apply to some of the cheap plates offered by SpeedyReg), you have to pay two transfer fees (so £160 rather than £80).

If you're looking to do the transfer as cheaply as possible, you need to go into it with your eyes open to avoid unforeseen costs.
