Going to look at this this afternoon, for the Mrs.....

My questions.....

Do we know this car ?
What do I need to check ?
How much are white indicators ?
How much is a shiney grill ?
Is it priced reasonably ?

It's not all that cheap, but then it's a clean old thing with plenty of history, so it's a better bet than some of the ebay ones that are posted here.

Check for rusty wings, under the indis, and rust under the side cladding.

White indis are about £30 the set for bosch ones, the cheepo Taiwanese ones tend to pop out on the motorway.

Given that it's so original perhaps a bling grille and white indis are a bad idea?

Don't you just love marketing speak?:

This is a brokered sale and keenly priced at £2650 to reflect the owners desire to close a sale in a reasonable time-frame.

Oh dear. What happened to simply "owner would like to sell quickly"

(Nice looking car though! Agree about keeping original. Does she have any idea how fast the 300-24v is? Tell her to ask Arwen!) Check head gasket and wiring loom - someone will be along to tell you what to look for. My limited knowledge says 'mayonnaise' in the oil filler cap and wire sheathing that crumbles.

Proper car dealer flannel...

"All interior electrics work - The only exception is the rear folding headrests which are permanently down."

"In summary, this is a most pleasant driving environment which adds to the ownership experience."

i would leave ot original too, though a grille and indicators wont set you back that much,, run it for a while and check for oil leaks, frustrating and can be expensive to fix

I wonder if the dealer realises that you have to lift the rear 'electric' headrests by hand and that they only drop 'down' with the electric button.

I thought mine were broke, until I realised that it's just a drop down feature!

Fantastic. An opportunity to make the salesman look a donkey. As you lift up the headrest with your hands, say "The rear headrests are housed in their standard manual setting, which, via human assistance, can be reset to the auto function thus."

Wierdly enough I saw it last night on the net www.detailingworld.co.uk. It's the first time I've ever seen this website. Spooky.

Also he quotes 231 bhp but that's only for non cat cars and this one has a cat so it's a 220bhp model.

Too much money I think.

Now that is interesting. Somebody recently pointed out that a car that's been well detailed will hide its history, and may not be a good buy.

As for this one:

Yet the Detailingworld thread shows overspray and a dent.

It looks like a nice car, but it has been prettied up, regardless of what the seller says.

Nice detective work. Knowledge is power - puts the buyer in a very strong position to knock the price down.

You would really have to love the M104 engines to pay this sort of money for an 'H' reg!

I paid £2750 for my 'H' reg 300E 24v saloon nearly 4 years ago (but I did spend £1000 afterwards, putting some things right - like the aircon).

I think a 'price for a quick sale' would be nearer the £1750 mark

Cheers
Andy

Just what a paint Thickness Gauge is useful for.

So, who's lauging now.?..;)

Deffo too much. It's gone from an immaculate, nice looking 300-24 to a tarted up average car.

I am surprised you've only just seen detailingworld, it's been on here loads of times.....it's a good site for Nerds...:D

Not far off what I paid for a later car, so unless it is lovely I would give it a miss.

I'm surprised no-one has contacted me about mine from the classifieds section given it is only a couple of hundred more than this?;)

Then again Ian has told me to keep it so I just might...

Its a lot less than I paid for mine 18 months ago (on 51k miles FWIW ) and it looks like its pretty well presented. If you want a 300 24V you could do a lot worse.

Probably too late but:

If everything is as described then I think its reasonably priced as it shouldn't need much doing to it for a bit. A grand or two fast disappears when getting things put right on these.

I thought the head rests worked from the vacuum system but could well be wrong..

I'm still baffled as to why people think these are so inferior to the later E320s, they just have a different engine and a couple of cosmetic tweaks, but I'm obviously biased :D

Re checking: Go through the history to see what's been done. Everything should work.

-It should show ATF changes and possible CHG repairs at this mileage.

-AC should work

-Gearbox should be smooth without flaring between changes (its a 5 speed, check reverse)

- Aerial should retract fully

- The armrest piping looks like it may have been redone, mine was perfect when I bought it but now it has 4 or 5 splits (like every other W124)..

- A bit of driver's seat bolster wear is normal

- Rear windscreen delamination round the edges is normal

- Mayo in coolant tank is probable CHG failure, expect to see some oil leaks under the bonnet though. At the front is not critical, CHG leaks at the back on the manifold side (I believe).

- On the test drive it should fire up first time, and warning lights should drop out pretty quickly. Squeaky noises from the front indicate a possible worn belt tensioner/shock or worse..

- Moving away should be smooth with no big clunks or jerky changes and bear in mind the engine, although very smooth feels a bit lame under 3.5k.

- If you floor it, kickdown should be pretty crisp and the car should take off surprisingly quickly and with a nice raw exhaust note.

er thats about it, and keep it original.

Good luck

Interesting comments....I've just got back - day trip to Brighton with the family, and a qick visit to see the car.

It looks nice, sounds bad. As mentioned by eagle-eyes above, it has had some paint work done to it, It also has a non MB radiator and fan - well, there were no MB symbols on them......It sounds like a bag of old bits of copper pipe in a box being shaken when started, and for the first few mins when run. Water pump was very noisy as well. The rear screen has also been replaced, and very badly - the seals are rotten, with rust coming through....Didn't bother to drive it, as when I pointed out that it needs the screen, water pump and some paintwork, he said, well it's worth at least £2.5k, as all that could be doen for £150.....errr no, it's worth what someone will pay, and what competant machanic can do all that (or even source the correct parts) for that amount ?

Many thanks to all who have taken some time to think about my questions, and come back with usefull info

Just goes to show that there is no substitute for seeing a car in the flesh. Pity as it looked nice in the pics..
