I've left a deposit on an E300 with a cherished plate,
Last Friday the owners gave all the paperwork to the garage to have the plate transfered on to the new car.

I phoned the DVLA today to find out how it was going, however they had not recieved any info yet.

Has anyone any experience of how long this takes and what the procedure is ?
I was wondering if I be should be chasing it up:confused:

Bizzarely this is something that now takes longer to do. Used to be able to get this carried out same day at DVLA Vehicle Registration Offices (VRO's). Now it is a bit more longwinded. Irrespective of how the transfer request is place I understand that the papers are now all sent to the DVLA, Swansea for their records to be amended. Replacement Registration Certificates normally take four weeks from receipt of a confirmation letter from the local registration office.

I just did this last week. This only relates to numbers that are currently on a retention certificate:

Everything is done same day at the local DVLA office you go to.

You need the certificate, your current tax disc & registration document, MOT (if applicable).

They then issue you a certificate that enables you to make up the plates, and give you a new Tax disc.

They send away your reg document, with a lead time of 5 weeks.

You also need to tell your insurers that theplate has changed.

I was impressed how quick it all was (done in a day). Obviously you just need to wait for the updated registration document to come to you.

The garage have all the stuff to put the plate on to the new car,
Does this mean I can pick the car up when the new tax disc and plate certificate are issued or will I have to wait until the V5 comes back

I would say so. Confirm with dealer.

The simple guide is that the plate MUST match the tax disc.

Not having the V5 isn't a problem, not having the matching tax disc is.

You will need the document that allows you to get the plates made if you get them done 100% legally.

Yes, you don't need the V5, as stated the plates and the Tax Disc must match. If the dealer has the tax disc with the replacement number you're good to go. Only reason for needing to wait for the V5 would be if you were buying the car privately.

I am buying the car privately, the garage has all the stuff to put the plate on the car they are selling, not the one I'm buying.

Do you know what would be the difference with a private sale:confused:

Well once they've assigned the plate to the new car a registration number and tax disc will be re-allocated to the car you're buying. The V5 will take time to come back. Have you already bought the car?

Did you get to see the V5 before commiting to buy the car?

The issue you have is if the V5 has been sent of for the plate transfer before you bought the car the seller can't notify the DVLA that you've bought the car. Technically they need the V5 to come back so that you can both fill in the transfer / new owner section of the V5, although getting the V5 back will take a few weeks. The seller could write to the DVLA to explain that the plate transfer has been carried out and that the vehicle has since been sold.

I've only seen a photocopy of the log book, I've paid a deposit and had a HPI check done.

I wonder if the DVLA have any specific forms or procedures for this as it must happen often

Yes you should be able to use a form V62 to obtain a new registration document, that coupled with a letter to the DVLA from the seller explainig the plate transfer & change of ownership for additional clarity should be sufficient.
