Hi, I am new to this forum and indeed Mercs.

I am considering buying a 2001 E320 CDI with 127K on the clock. I will be off to see it over the next couple of days but would like to hear some advice on what specifically to look for.

It has the obligatory rust around the arches and door sils which I can get done. It has a FSH the last of which was done in Jan 09. (oil and filter)

What are the intervals on these cars. Is the next service a big one.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Regards

joel

Hi Joel,

If im buying a car I always budget to have a major service..i.e a change of all the filters and fluids...

Mechanically these cars are robust.. Just check it pulls like a train..
Bodywork you already know about but rusty spring perches are also common and a few hundred to put right.

Check all the electrics work... A/C specifically. The pixels on the left and right of dadh will probably be distorted but this is common and fixable for under £200... or just an elastic band if you feel handy.

Rust on the front cross member is often overlooked, mainly because it's not easily visible, but it IS structural and should be looked at. Rear subframe bushes are another 'hidden' problem and not always checked properly at MOT time because they're well hidden. Clonking from the rear end when accelerating or deccelerating is the main symptom, as well as 'floating' at speed.

Welocome Joel. :)

If the car has full Mercedes Benz service history (or very close to full MBSH) you will probably be able to get the rust issues rectified using the bodywork warranty.

I successfully managed the claim even though the last service the car had before I owned it, was carried out by a non-MB garage. I received two new front wings and a new tailgate free of charge.

HTH.

Paul.
